Voltaire

Voltaire is the Refuge's resident scientist. He doesn't specialize in any particular discipline as he's always finding something new and different to investigate and experiment with. This makes his a job a whole lot harder than it needs to be and only ends up discrediting most of the work he does irregardless of its relative success. It can be more than a bit disheartening to have his research ignored, but Voltaire tries not to let it get him down. There's too much to discover in the world and he's only just one dragon!

The only dragon he can call anything close to a friend is Valkyrie, one of the clan's several Messenger-Scouts. Sometimes he's able to convince her to accompany him in the field, especially when he's researching one of both his and Valkyrie's favorite subjects: biodiversity. It is a topic that fascinates them both, giving them the chance to bond over a shared interest. Even so, when at home Valkyrie prefers the company of others over himself, leaving him in his lab.

It is a poorly kept secret that Voltaire is unspeakably lonely, more so than any of the other socially-challenged individuals that call the Refuge home. His passion for his work puts them off, as he is scarcely able to hold a conversation about anything else. A few of the less kind dragons have even called him self-absorbed. However this isn't the case; he just doesn't know how to talk about anything else.

So Voltaire stays in his lab, alone and quiet but for the scratch of pen on paper and occasionally the whirring of a centrifuge. He does his research, studies his specimens, takes his notes, never to be interrupted. Everyone assumes his work keeps him from being lonely, and he's very good at hiding how he feels about his solitude. But if they only tried to talk to him instead of just rolling their eyes at his scientific rambles, they'd know how alone his soul actually is.
