Biography
Once, Lahmu had a different role, a different name: he was the guardian of dreams, the stars of the night that would gently cuddle dreamers into transcendent dreamtime. He brought peace to ease the pain of nightmares, defended dreamers against turmoil and pain; he lived among the stars, in a space not many could reach, observing and overseeing the entire plane of the dreams created by all the creatures of the world. But not all dreams end well, and not all guardians live long enough to tell stories of happy endings. Lahmu met a dancer. She was a ghostly light in the dark, an alluring call and soul in a world of silent song. In her presence, the stars breathed, walking hand in hand with the moon. The tune colored the sky. Her movements rang with divinity. He followed her. He had never seen anything more ethereal or sacred. She said nothing. Smoothly she asked him to join her dance, to cherish the moon and cherish the moment. He danced with her. He had never danced before, but it didn’t matter – he had just answered the stirring craving in his heart as he felt it. He was smiling. Smiling in the face of Death. He awakened with a heavy head. He did not feel well, something was off, something had become… strange. He was not at home. He was not on the star that he had come from. He had fallen too far down – he had no grasp anymore on the dreams that he had loved with so much heart. The dreams had been taken from him. Taken in one passionate dance. But she did not kill him, even as he cried for death, cried for the possibility to be free again. His liberation never came, but the following full moon, the one who fancied herself his liberator returned. She was smiling. "I gave you a Gift. Don't waste it." Whispers on the wind. He had been gifted with immortality. He had been made immortal in exchange for the dreams that he had been protecting. And that was how the first nightmares made their way into the world. |
