Lore
Almandine came to Clan Snastle in the hopes that the roaming clan would make a good base from which he could pursue any leads on the strange and terrible cryptids that are rumored to exist around Sornieth. Originally a historian, he was driven to his profession by a dark secret. Years ago, Almandine's brother Andesine went missing as their clan journeyed over the Wandering Contagion. He had willingly plummeted into the Wyrmwound during an unexpected storm to ensure that his mate, an Imperial named Claudyia, could make it across safely. The clan had searched and searched for survivors, and found several clan members who had managed to glide to safe ground. Andesine, a flightless Snapper who had been carried on his mate's back, was most certainly dead in the caustic sludge. Almandine was beside himself when a grieving Claudyia told him what had happened. He interrogated the returning members for any scrap of hope, and when none was offered, set out for the Wyrmwound himself, resolute in his denial and unable to accept that his brother was gone. He found one lead - a terrified hatchling claimed to have seen a 'creature' crawl out of the Wyrmwound that day. The little dragon's parents dismissed the idea as a nightmare or an overactive imagination, but Almandine noticed that the hatchling seemed disproportionately scared of himself, and after pressing the child, discovered that the creature was similar in size, stature and colouration. He had a lead on his brother. Stomach twisting at the idea of what the Wyrmwound could have done to Andesine, he pursued the case. He researched dragons that had touched the Wyrmwound's broiling ooze, and found that even if such dragons had survived, many suffered great physical and mental changes, ranging from strange markings and behaviors to hideous mutations and insanity. Almandine decided to keep his research a secret - Claudyia was trying to live in the face of her grief and there was no need to give her false hope, especially when the chances of his brother still being wholly healthy seemed so slim. Years passed. Almandine no longer called himself an historian, but a Cryptozoologist. The ruse of researching creatures of rumor and myth gave him the perfect excuse to pursue leads on his brother, but over time the work came to fascinate him, and his research for Andesine naturally led him to strange and mysterious happenings. Before he knew it he was a cyryptozoologist in truth, his life changed forever as he obsessively hunted. He moved to Clan Snastle, a perfect home base where none could know of his brother, and searched. Rumor eventually led him on the trail of a being called 'The Fetid Horror' - a shambling mess of a beast who caught lone dragons and consumed them whole. Almandine traveled to a clan who had witnessed the beast firsthand, to hear their accounts. They told him of a horribly mutated beast of draconic appearance, who had shambled out of the woods nearby, seemingly dazed and unaware of it's surroundings or path. The witnesses had stared fearfully as the creature staggered slowly by, until it seemed to become aware of one of them. With frightening speed, it lunged at them, sobs and moans suddenly bursting from its gaping mouth. It caught a stunned dragon in an embrace, holding her tightly as she screamed, and sobbing. Some attempted to pull the beast off her, but to no avail. They showed Andesine the raw, blistered flesh from where they had touched the slimy creature. The clan could only watch in horror as the creature held thier writhing clanmate. Viscous ooze poured from the creature, enveloping and dissolving her in a matter of minutes. Soon she was gone entirely, the creature sobbing in a sticky puddle, one sound ripping from it again and again in a voice like a death rattle - "Clau... dyia..." The dragons fled, and the creature must have left again, because when they returned, weapons in claws, there was only a puddle of rank ooze, the young dragon's jewellery glinting through the cloudy mess. Almandine nearly threw up when he heard what the creature had said. He had found his brother at last. Redoubling his efforts, he looked for any more leads on where the creature had gone. Years passed and he tracked its whereabouts, leads coming so infrequently that he had plenty of time to pursue other cryptids too. His mind became twisted with the secret he kept, obsessing over finding the cryptids - all of them. Almandine no longer knows what he will do when he finally finds his brother. All his life he would have killed to protect him, and as the years pass by and he becomes increasingly desensitized to the gore that accompanies his brother's victims, he finds it harder and harder to stop seeing him as his brother still, just a sad, desperate creature looking for his lover. |
