Ever since she was young, Umbra always found a second voice in her. Wormwood, it said it was called, and they sang her to sleep. In between the singing, however, Wormwood had taken it upon themself to whisper the secrets of those around the two of them; they were also not picky about what they told. Nothing was anathema to them; not the joys, nor sorrows and horrors of life. When Wormwood was discovered by others, Umbra's community urged her to seek help. They said that it was not appropriate for one body to house two souls. As they said this, Wormwood spoke up once more to her. They're all afraid, they whispered to her. They don't like that we can see them as they are. And Umbra trusted them. Never before had they given her reason to doubt. Wormwood, once again, had indeed told the truth. The community was afraid--but not of Wormwood; rather, they were afraid for Umbra. With her companion always there, no one believed that she would be able to lead a normal life. And so their lives continued, with Umbra and Wormwood going about their business in the orphanage, its academy, and the ruins and fields beyond. A young Wildclaw chattering away to herself while she jumped from toppled column to crumbling wall was a common sight. The years passed like this, and Wormwood and Umbra grew closer together. Everyone else avoided them, often going out of their way to take a different path or enter a different shop than Umbra. Because of this, it became clear to the two of them that they would have to travel away to a place where no one knew of Wormwood. |
