_____Labelle was noble-born, and her birth led to the inevitable destruction of her family name. It isn’t something she talks about (not that she talks) to anyone, not even her plants; the very few dragons who would know her past are long-dead, taken from her in a cruel act that left her alone and friendless.

_____The only dragon breathing who would know where she comes from she aches to meet in her travels, but it's likely he will never recognize her.

_____There’s reasons for that: she maintains a constant cover of mud and other floral decay smeared across her hide, with leaves, bark, and grass stuck in the miasma. It provides good camouflage, she claims, and truth be told, when Labelle is tucked in the bushes, nobody can spot her; but the rest of the clan kind of just wishes she’d take a bath. Occasionally Skullbeak and Alduin will sneak up on her just to try and dunk her in a passing stream while they’re on their travels - but her entire life is about standing guard, so more often than not they’re the ones who end up wet, with Labelle on the bank and the other members of the Wandering Clan looking on in amusement. Her adornments serve purpose, and rearranging them after she’s been cleaned is too much of a pain for her to bother with, even if it means most of her adoptive family keeps her at a distance. The tenuous almost-company she keeps with them is enough to satisfy her need for social interaction - and she’s much happier watching, anyway. They respect her solitude, she keeps them safe, everybody ends up happy at the end of the day.

_____To those who aren’t familiar with her, she comes off as aloof and almost arrogant, her eyes forever disapproving behind the mask she wears. This is very much on purpose: after all, guards aren’t typically expected to be friendly, and there’s less questions when dragons don’t expect you to talk. She doesn’t want to talk. Talking means telling stories, and stories take time, and she gets bored halfway through telling hers, anyway. She doesn’t think hers are very interesting. Mostly, hers are just sad. Sure, she’s seen some interesting things, but she’s heard more interesting things, and listening is so much better than talking. Besides, if the stories she hears are good enough, she can tell them to her plants later. There’s only one dragon in the clan who does know her stories, but that’s because she can talk to Alduin (most of the time. If he wants to. He almost never does).

_____Plus, they don’t want her to change. It’s the first thing that had drawn her to the Wandering Clan: they didn’t want her to be anything but who she was. As long as she did her job, and didn’t jeopardize the well-being of anyone else, they didn’t care how she lived or who she was, and that’s so drastic from everything she’s ever known before that she’d embraced it (and them) fully. Plus, they were a home that moved, and that had been the one thing she’d always found homes to be lacking. It was why she’d never stayed anywhere for very long. Staying in one place for too long made her hide crawl, and Odahviing’s timing is always perfect: the matriarch calls for them to break camp approximately four hours after Labelle’s started to pace her post, every time, nearly without fail.

_____Her stories (the ones she refuses to tell) are hardly pleasant. Born in a clan that craved a son but received a daughter, her father had refused to give her to the Gladekeeper, instead raising his daughter as he would have any male-born hatchling, which was too far from tradition for the rest of the family to stand for it for long. While he was teaching her the ways of the sword, her uncle was quietly sowing unrest throughout the ranks of the clan. A female? Being raised as a warrior? It was unheard of!

_____Labelle didn’t know how many family codes her father broke to train her. While the rest of the clans plotted against her own, she was busy learning how to be a proper nobleman (her gender was completely irrelevant). She studied hard and learned well under his tutelage, both the art of fighting and the skill of magic that was so innately woven into her very feathers. Her father was proud, and she was pleased to know she was doing her duty as the firstborn and eldest. He called her skill ‘uncanny’, and praised her daily about the speed with which she was learning. Still, it wasn’t enough to save him. It wasn’t enough to save any of them.

_____It was shortly after her 12th hatchday that she woke to find the once-noble ranks of her family in ruin, fallen under the claws of those who disapproved of her father’s rebellious teachings. The last words her uncle had snarled at her were it’s all your fault, and she’d fled before his anger, knowing her magic was not enough to protect her from the elder skydancer. For a long time, the nights were cold and hungry and wet, and if it weren’t for the plants whispering their magics in her ears and telling her where she could find food, she would have never survived and--

_____Anyway, that isn’t the sort of thing a dragon can just shake off, so she just doesn’t bother bringing it up. Anyone who asks about her past gets a cold glare and a spray of mud slapped at them via her powerful tail for their efforts, so most dragons just don’t anymore. She still wears her warrior’s armor with pride and carries her father’s katana, but in all the wanderings her clan has done since she joined them, she’s yet to have anyone recognize her old family crest, dulling on the handle of her katana. Someday, she’s sure someone will, and she waits for that day with bated breath, because the only dragon alive who would recognize her crest is her uncle, and she yearns for her blade to sink into his flesh...
