Nera has a talent for languages – as long as they are dead.

As the Clan's translator, he is most often found bent over a desk covered with books and parchment, carefully teasing the meaning out of ancient manuscripts and copying them out in flawless Draconic script. He prides himself both on his excellent penmanship and his ability to marry fidelity with art in his translations.

Part of his gift with dead languages means that he is also a brilliant code-breaker. Codes are, after all, just another kind of written language.

He owns a vast collection of books, scrolls and manuscripts – from scraps and notes to epic poems and thousand-page novels – of which he is immensely proud. He keeps these meticulously ordered and carefully stored in a sub-section of the Clan's hoard, which Corvus keeps temperature- and moisture-regulated for him. He constantly adds to the collection, and yet remains determined to translate every single piece no matter how large it grows. It’s lucky that he is a Spiral: able to power through his work at high speed. However, like all of his species, he also has the tendency to fall asleep mid-thought – most often atop a pile of papers, which then become his makeshift bed.

Most find it odd that a Spiral should enjoy such painstaking work as translation, which requires great patience, diligence, and focus. However, Nera is not like other Spirals: although he has all the usual energy and enthusiasm, he expresses it in a far calmer manner than others of his species. He attributes this to the fact that he was raised by Daell and Skald.

He found by the pair in the Tangled Wood. The story, as he was told it by his adopted parents, goes like this:

Several members of the Lundlaevungar were visiting the Shadowbinder’s domain for the Trickmurk Circus. They had set up camp in a clearing close to the main hub of activity, near to the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. One night, halfway through their stay in the shadowy, mist-shrouded woods, the dragons heard a scuttling, skittering noise in the undergrowth just outside the warm pool of light from their campfire. Immediately, the dragons began to trade whispers, terrifying one another with ideas of what horrifying creature might have crawled out of the Shadowbinder’s pool to find them, and drag them back to the fouled water with it.

Daell – whose hearing was better than most thanks to his sightless eyes – could tell from the sounds that whatever was out in the shadows was only small. Certainly not large enough to hurt any of them, not even him.

He asked Loki to accompany him, and his grandfather agreed: he was no more afraid than Daell, simply curious about what creature of shadow had so little stealth. Despite his lingering trepidation, Skald went with them, unwilling to let Daell venture alone into the mists even with Loki’s powers to protect him.

It didn’t take them long, with Daell’s acute hearing and Loki’s sharp eyes, to find what they were looking for: a tiny Spiral, not long out of his egg, clinging to a Shadow Sprite beneath a tangle of briars. The hatchling was shivering – whether with fear or with cold it was hard to tell – and he refused to come out from beneath the thorns. It was only when Daell asked the others to move back and crouched beside the bush himself, murmuring soothing encouragements and simply offering his sheathed claws, that the spiral slithered out and into his arms.

From that moment until they left the Tangled Wood, Nera refused to be parted from Daell. He also refused to speak except to whisper his name, just the once.

The Clan tried in vain to find any trace of Nera’s parents, but with neither the Spiral nor the Sprite willing or able to offer any more information, it proved impossible. So, at the end of the festival, Nera returned to the Starfall Isles; by the time they reached the Lair once more, Daell and Skald had both accepted him as their own. It was only months later that Nera and his Sprite companion began to speak – first to Daell and Skald, and then slowly to the rest of the clan.
Nera remembers nothing about the first Trickmurk Circus of his life, and his Sprite companion claims the same – though there are those in the Clan who suspect she maybe trying to protect him. The Shadow Sprite seems determined to protect Nera in all things. She is far more confrontational and less patient than he is, and will argue and fight on his behalf if antagonised.

However, that is not to say that Nera will not defend himself: much like his parents, he will allow a certain amount of leeway, but refuses to be bullied.

As he neared adulthood, Nera began to grow a long filament on his forehead, which developed into a glowing bulb of purple light. Not even Loki can explain why this occurred, but Nera finds it supremely useful: when he works late into the night, it lights his workspace in a manner that is far better for his nocturnal vision than glowing pocket baubles or firestarters.

When discussing something he is passionate about, Nera's Spiral nature returns full force and he finds it difficult to remain still, gesticulating wildly and pacing up and down, if not literally flying around the room. He also finds movement helpful when he gets stuck on a translation: he can sometimes be spotted flying circles around the Spire, clutching an open scroll in his claws.
