Midsummer
n. a feast celebrated on the day of your 26th birthday, which marks the point at which your youth finally expires as a valid excuse—when you must begin harvesting your crops, even if they’ve barely taken root—and the point at which the days will begin to feel shorter as they pass, until even the pollen in the air reminds you of the coming snow.

It's not uncommon to hear rumors of those who have abandoned their flights or cast aside their elemental alliance, caustic with rage and bitterness or apathy, a universal theme of dissatisfaction.

Midsummer, at some point in their life, was struck with this orphic feeling, buried within them, something repeating again and again there's more than this.

Perhaps it's what separates the passive observers of the world and the sentient life, the desire to improve past contentment, to discover more, to unearth something.

So Midsummer left their home with a switchblade and determination, as well as a newfound equanimity, because movement was better than the stagnancy of their past life.

They cut their strongest ties to the god of their homeland, gained weight, tried public service, lost weight, found religion again, devoted themself to science, and joined another, less common, more occult, religion, before deciding the only thing to do when one couldn't live for themself was to live for others.

Balance was the key, they decided. In their chaotic world, there was very little truth, but there was very much that could use some adjusting.

They retained their vagabond lifestyle, traveling and roving around, all humble words and kind remarks, with an unshakable desire to improve the world, backed this time by a thin, deadly sword and the blessings of the gods.

Midsummer became a sort of accidental priest, their discussions and ideas of accepting all the magic of the world, be it deity, shade, or some ancient unknowable danger in an effort to preserve the world for the young began to resound in taverns and the less structured schools of thought.

A paladin, it was muttered and whispered, with a thirst for peace and bloodstained blade. Someone who, somehow, had aligned themself, just slightly, with each deity, holding within them the ability to balance these forces. Someone who had merely talked a serthis assassin out of killing them and into traveling the world with them. Someone who held answers.

But Midsummer was oblivious, never slowing their travels. Joined by a serthis who refused to take a name in the draconic tongue, they slept under the empty skies of the Shattered Plains. The duo has sought out the creatures that reside until the Greatwyrm's Breach, hunting down the monsters that have plagued the world for so long.

No answers. Just a subjective idea of right and wrong, an inability to not try, and an unshakable desire to try to repair the world.
