Biography
Hephaestus
Goldpaw We're on our way through rugged land Top of that mountain we wanted to stand With hearts of gold But there is only forward, no other way Tomorrow was your hope at the end of the day And gold turns gray |

The Aureate Citadel is a place dedicated to the pursuit and preservation of knowledge. From above, it doesn't look like much, a squat, single story stone fortress that hardly deserves the grand title. But what lies on the surface is merely the gate. The true entrance is the spiraling staircase that leads straight down, a dizzying array of marble steps lit by tiny glimmering lights. A vast and sprawling underground citadel, some inhabitants say that there are miles of corridors, leading to thousands of rooms, dusty and forgotten, holding unknown treasures. It holds living quarters to rival any palace's, libraries, museums, and even gardens, the darkness illuminated by Byzantium's magic. Hephaestus is a smith of the Aureate Citadel, privileged to live in the luxurious lower levels as a reward for his skill. His work as a goldsmith is unparalleled, creating jewelry and ornaments of unsurpassed beauty, but he prides himself on being able to work any metal that passes through his smithy. After all, he had his beginnings in the scarred wastelands, learning to turn the scarce and impure ore found there into something useful. His patience and resourcefulness let him take metal that should have shattered under a single blow, and turn it into workable armor and tools for his clan, even if he had to keep laboring day and night, experimenting and working the metal, until he learned what would bring out its best. Word of his skill reached the ears of Byzantium, the prince of the Aureate Citadel with a penchant for collecting skilled artisans, who offered him an apprenticeship and a permanent position. Hephaestus learned the delicate art of goldsmithing at the prince's request, to pay him back for his patronage with marvels worthy of the citadel, but he has never forgotten his roots. Some nights, when all others have gone to their beds, his forges stay lit, as he labors the night with baser metals, creating objects more worthy of a mercenary than a prince. What if our hard work ends in despair? What if the road won't take me there? Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold |
