![]() “One must be cunning and wicked in this world.” The plague had already claimed me by the time I was old enough to leave the nest. I had no choice in where I went next; my parents had turned their backs on me as soon as the first traces of contamination had appeared on my shell's exterior. I was approached by a drake that towered over me, his face covered by a mask that obscured his features. I never knew his name. He fitted a collar around my neck and told me that I was his pet now, and he was to be my master. I trembled at his feet, and he laughed at me. He told me that I was going to be more fun than his last pet. He clipped a lead to my collar and took me to my new home. Come Pravus, he said, you are my wicked one now. It only took eight days for me to anger him past the point of forgiveness. I can still feel the sting of his broadsword on my hide, hear the edge of insanity in his voice as he attacked me. I was stained with my own blood that day, and I know I will never wash it off, no matter how much I bathe. I was dragged to the market in chains, my untreated wounds beginning to fester. My master asked a ridiculous amount for me, and I knew that no one would be willing to pay it. It was obvious to me that he asked that much because inside his insanity, he wanted to keep me as his plaything. I curled into a ball and wept, because I knew there would be no escape. That was how Enkil found me. The Vagrant Vizard of Vecordy is not a rich one, and I will never know what it was, but something made the great guardian stop that day. He saved me from my master and brought me to his humble tavern where he cleaned my wounds and provided me with armour under which I can hide my shame. I stayed because I met Hallows, and I saw something of myself in him. The VAgrant Vizard of Vecody had adopted him out of kindness, but beyond that they did not know what to do with him. He was not like other hatchlings and they were wary of the disturbed look in his eyes. But to me, it was no different than looking at my own reflection. So I stayed for him; my tiny new friend, the devil on my shoulder. Sometimes we like to play wicked little games together, with our twisted minds in knots. If I'm honest, I think they're afraid of us.
