History

Blackout comes from a special lineage of mages. Mystic magic runs in his blood causing his skin to ripple constantly from blue to purple. Its evidence of his latent powers and also forever marks him as something supernatural. Blackout and his siblings were born in secret in a desolate area of the Shifting Expanse. As soon as they were able to form their own pearls, they were split up and sent to various remote clans to be raised separately. Because of this, he never knew his parents well. He remembers his father, silent but incredibly gentle. The deep colors of his butterfly wings, the way his eyes would close when he smiled. He remembers his mother, a terrifying force when upset but always reassuring. She would carry them on her back when they complained from the long walks. He also remembers them being constantly on the run. Enemies who hid in the shadows chased them out of every clan they took refuge in. When they split up, his parents warned them to never let their guard down and to never stop running because they won’t stop until their bloodline is gone.

That was the last time he ever saw his family. He doesn’t even know if they’re still alive, but as long as he's still breathing he'll continue to fight against their unknown attackers.


Personality

Blackout has a wary, distrustful nature due to constantly being cautious of his every movement. He avoids large groups and tries to draw as little attention to himself as possible. If you can break through his cynic nature, you’ll find he’s really an adorable dork. He depends more on his street smarts and instinct to get by but can barely read.


Parents

Surefang is an innocent mage who's only transgression was falling in love with Nero. She made and sold lotions, fragrance mists, perfumes, candles in her clan. She lead a relatively peaceful life there. When Nero arrived, she sensed something was different about him from the others. He would help out in the clan, taking the most unfavorable jobs that no one else wanted without a single complaint. She was used to pearlcatchers who couldn’t help but engage in idle chatter, but he kept solely to himself. He was mysterious in every sense of the word. Persistently, she met with him every day, keeping him company after she had sold all her wares. Surefang couldn't understand how a dragon so suited to clanlife could be clanless. Slowly he opened up to her presence. When he finally told her the reason for being distant, any fear she felt was for him. Her mother is a lake spirit so she had long since accepted there are strange phenomenon in Sornieth. When the Illumni arrived on Nero’s trail, she ran with him without a thought.

Nero carries the mysterious shade magic in his blood. It's been in his line for generations, probably spanning back to the first instigation of the Shade. He doesn't speak very often, choosing instead to observe what's around him. After his parents were killed, he learned that simply laying low would not save his family. Like him, they would have to constantly travel from place to place without ever putting down roots. They couldn't make lasting friendships, couldn't make a stable trade for themselves. Not wanting type of life for his unborn hatchlings, he had resolved to never continue his bloodline – until he met Surefang. He arrived at her clan one day seeking sanctuary. As normal, he wouldn’t stay long, just enough to rest and earn some treasure for the trip to the next clan. He was disheveled and had obviously been journeying for a while but they allowed him to stay. He worked hard amongst them doing mostly menial labor. Surefang would visit him often in that time. Sometimes she brought food or she would just sit with him in silence. He tried deterring her but she was insistent. After a while, he came to enjoy her visits. She made him believe he could have a normal clan life - until the Illumni arrived. But this time when Nero ran, he didn’t run alone.
