Vesper is a Rocktalker, one with a strong connection to the Earth element who meditates and “speaks” to the stone and earth of a specific area in order to learn what has occurred in the recent past. It is an ancient art, said to have been begun by the Earthshaker himself, and thus it is not widely...believed in, nowadays. There are many, including much of Stonehearth itself, who believe that Rocktalkers really just use common tracking methods such as scent, print-reading, and a deep understanding of the landscape in order to attain their knowledge. There are tales of dragons conning unsuspecting Clans into believing they have supernatural powers and wreaking havoc. However she comes about it, though, there is no denying that Vesper is an excellent border guard.

Vesper ostensibly came to Stonehearth in response to a call for guards and trackers. Their territory was expanding, and though they had a treaty with the Centaurs to the West, the rest of their new land was vastly underexplored. Vesper presented herself, showed her techniques (it took a long while; the guard tasked to watch her actually fell asleep, but that is a story for another time), and was accepted into the Clan in a relatively short time frame. It was a good match; Stonehearth gained a physically and mentally formidable ally, and Vesper gained a relatively safe place in which to better her art and commune with the Earthshaker, which was her true aim. Whether or not the stones actually "talk" does not matter; she believes it. And regardless, she gets results.

Vesper has never thought of Rocktalking as “work,” although she understood very early how to disguise it as such in order to gain the protection of a Clan. It is a deeply spiritual act that just happens to have real-world uses. Unlike some of her kind, she is pragmatic about the two sides of the coin, and will not discriminate to use herself and her abilities to their fullness. She has had to change her explanation of it several times over the years; Stonehearth as a whole are not a hugely religious bunch, except for a few outliers. Many stop listening after the first mention of the Earthshaker as anything but a metaphor.

When not on duty, Vesper can most often be found helping other members of Stonehearth with tasks better suited to someone with her bulk and strength. She has also become the unofficial “counselor” of Stonehearth, quite accidentally. Perhaps from her Rocktalking, perhaps not, she always knows when a member of the Clan is upset, and because she does not need to sleep, she can always be there to console them. Though it is not her calling in life, this is how she met her mate, Aubade; Aubade had a bad bout of anxiety one night and Vesper found her shaking and unable to speak in her den. She stayed with her through the night and it somehow turned into them living together.

Vesper is the rock of the Clan, pun intended. Her presence has strengthened the Clan as a whole by tenfold, at least.
