Once upon a time, Belos was simply a fraction of the hivemind known as the Shade. He helped in the great battle against the deities and was inevitably banished from the world along with the rest of the Shade when the deities created the World Pillar.
When the Shade returned to the world thanks to the Arcanist's meddling, it was ripped apart and its grand, mighty form was scattered across the world in various forms. Belos was one such piece of the Shade that was scattered elsewhere.

When he awoke, Belos found himself in the body of a newly deceased dragon, giving life to the creature once more. He knows that the rest of the hivemind exists in various areas of the world, so he searches for the other pieces of the Shade. His goal is to gather enough creatures that have been influenced by the Shade and, eventually, return to his true form as a part of the disembodied force of darkness. But until that day comes, he hides his true nature among other dragons and pretends to be something he is not.
