He was borne with the need to fan the flames of a forge and carry a hammer in his claws.

Hatched amid embers of dying forges, Bombur was instantly taken with the sparks of passing coals and the hissing and spitting of weaponry hitting the quench. Others amongst the trade chuckled in fond amusement many an encounter when the then much larger and lumbering tundra would take to the forge, his mane blowing about him like the fires of a sunset.

However, such a form was ill-fitted to his abilities, and after many moons of studies with several scholars amid the tribe, he was able to change his form to that of one much easier to deal with his own forge. He carries the sparks of the embers upon his wings, their surfaces hardened and immune to the heat long ago.

Now he spends many of his days in his own corner of the forges, catching stray sparks upon his wings and lighting the fires of many of the others. However, his size should not deceive anyone- he is one of the fiercest in skirmishes and few see him coming until it is too late.
