She doesn't have fleshed out lore yet, but I probably goes something like this:

After years spent living in the under the great tree with the odd combination of corrupted royalty, dark spirits, and wandering witches, her haughtiness and self-importance finally ticked off the wrong magic user. Narani was new to the area and a bit more wild in temperament than most of her fellow witches. When Aiterra began to confess to her that she pitied the witches she lived among as revolting creatures who lack education and chase fanciful dreams of power, Narani's barely lidded temper got the better of her. She cursed Aiterra to be bound to the land the occupied so that she would never enter the afterlife. Instead, she would wander the area she had lived in life but as one of the very creatures of magic that she held in such disdain.

Only months later, Aiterra was poisoned by a corrupted Lune (via Bati), who saw her as a challenger to his command. Instead of removing her, his actions triggered the curse laid upon her by Narani. She now remains among the old forest spirits, far enough from who she was for Lune to keep his power, but close enough that no one can forget what it cost.

New Aiterra plotline! She's thrown herself into studying magic with a force she never has before so she can suck out Bati's life force and regain her life and beauty! It wasn't really a goal of hers until this Alaea showed up but now she's enraged. Possibility is her new sidekick and they've got a real Kronk and Yzma vibe. Bati after his learning to heal character arc apologizes to her not for killing her but for doing it without really knowing what he had cursed her to and the two of them bond while trying to find a way to bring her life back. In the end, they fail though she becomes real good at magic. She decides she likes herself better the way she is and becomes friends with Alaea while continuing her close friendship with Bati. She even takes on a student in the newcomer Cenue.
