Biography

The odds were against Bering from the start. Born into a clan divided with parents in a similar state, Bering had barely gotten a look at the Southern Icefields before he was abandoned in the middle of it. The clan was immediately dissolved after months of in-fighting and all dragons went their separate ways. Bering was lost in the chaos, but it seemed that neither of his parents cared enough to go looking for him. Bering survived on his own for a while, growing into an awkward adolescent. As time wore on he became disenchanted with the frigid, barren landscape he called home and longed for a warmer clime. He dreamed of vibrant color, of soft grass under his feet and the mist of a light rain on his face. Once his wings were strong enough he set out for the mainland seeking to see his dreams become reality.

Hitchhiking one's way across an entire continent is no easy feat, and by the time Bering is as far away from the Icefields as physically possible he's exhausted. He rests for a few days at a little store owned by a Pearlcatcher named Sirrup*, however once he's rested and eaten his fatigue soon gives way to awe. The Viridian Labryinth is beautiful! Everything is warm and green and lush, so different from the freezing desert he was born in. He's never felt more at home than in the midst of this dense and flowering jungle.

Once again Bering finds himself living on his own, but this time he hardly minds. Food and water are plentiful and making a shelter is easy enough with all the wood and stone to be found. Life is so, so good and Bering has never been happier. Although his solitary lifestyle comes to an end when he is spotted by a wandering scout. The scout is a young Wildclaw, not much older than himself, and comes from a place called the Outcasts' Refuge. When he finds that Bering has been on his own all this time he offers him a place among his people. Bering is hesitant about the idea of living with other dragons, but eventually accepts the offer with a promise to be given utmost privacy when he needs it. The deal done, the scout, whom Bering comes to learn is named Barrett, leads him back to the Refuge where the young Coatl is welcomed by an odd cast of characters. Overwhelmed, Bering quickly retreats to the den he has been assigned, thanking Barrett for his help settling him in and promising to speak the next day.

Adjusting to clan life is a slow and sometimes difficult process for Bering. He counts himself lucky that he has found friends in Barrett and his twin brother Ivan, both of whom were born into the Outcasts' number and know the clan's workings inside and out. The more comfortable he becomes, the more he starts to take notice of his fellow Outcasts. The two individuals he observes the most are the clan's only other Coatls. He's only seen a handful of others of his breed in his life, not including his parents, and their presence intrigues him. Hakan he quickly gets bored of; the only interesting thing about the blacksmith is how unbelievably arrogant he is. But Shani... Shani is a different story.

When he asks his friends about her they smile and start telling story after story about their dear Aunt Shani. Bering is taken aback - she didn't look so much older than him but apparently there was quite the age gap between them. The twins tell him that Shani and their father are close childhood friends and that she has been around for as long as they can remember. Knowing that she is so much older than him doesn't put a stop to his interest though; if anything it only makes it stronger. He takes to watching her from a distance, trying to learn about her from afar. She's very quiet and seems at times a bit lonely. Most of the clan don't pay much attention to her unless they want something from her, save a mean-spirited Spiral who enjoys picking on her, and Bering longs to approach her. Everytime he tries she gets such a surprised and open look on her face and he ends up getting tongue-tied. His natural aloofness and matter-of-fact way of speaking don't lend themselves to romance very well.

He slowly starts to make progress with Shani. Now when he approaches her he is rewarded with a shy smile and an acknowledging nod of the head. He think he might even be able to woo her, as young and inexperienced as he is. But as is often the case in his life, the peace doesn't last long. Barrett and Ivan's younger sister Valkyrie has started to hang around their little group, and it's obvious to all three of them that she's a bit smitten with Bering. Bering is never mean to her, though he can be a bit short with her. He doesn't want her attention, lest Shani see them and think he is no longer interested in her. He doubles his efforts to charm the older female and it doesn't go unnoticed. However it isn't Shani or Valkyrie that takes note of him, but the clan's resident musician, Fabre. As unexpected as this development is, Bering doesn't pay it much mind; he knows of Shani's history with Fabre and knows that there has never been a romantic connection between them, despite Catarina's jealous claims. Confident about his status as Shani's only suitor he continues as usual.

So he's more than confused when he finds that Shani has less and less time for him. He asks Barrett to do some snooping for him, and they find that she has been spending an unusual amount of time with Fabre. Not a week later does Fabre announce that he has finally found his muse in Shani and that he has never felt more inspired. This shocks not only Bering but the entire clan. Fabre is notorious for his fear of commitment as well as his vehement denial of any feelings he might have for Shani, so to learn that he has all but taken her as his mate is astounding. Of course they are not truly married, and Shani seems overwhelmed and uncomfortable with all the attention Fabre is suddenly showering upon her, both things that Bering takes comfort in. Though it steams him like nothing else to have to witness Fabre sing songs and write operas for Shani, with her only smiling politely all the while. Bering has never been good at expressing himself, but now he wants to kick and scream like a child and smash Fabre's stupid harp over his stupid head.

He can't do anything about it. Shani would never tell anyone if she were uncomfortable or unhappy with Fabre and Bering is scared to death of approaching her now. From their few brief conversations he knows that she only wants to feel wanted, and with Fabre she certainly does. He only wishes that he could tell her that he could make her feel that way too, that he could make her feel wanted without making her the center of attention that she so obviously doesn't want to be. He has spent his whole life alone and would happily continue to do so as long as she is by his side.

Until he can get up the courage to talk to Shani again, Bering spends his days either in his own company or with Ivan and Barrett. Sometimes Valkyrie tags along, and he doesn't try to stop her flirting anymore. He listens to her stories of her travels and nods his head in acknowledgement when he isn't. When night finally comes and he's left alone, he settles down in his den and wonders what it would be like to have Shani pressed to his side, but the thoughts never feel real enough. He closes his eyes and drifts into a troubled sleep. He doesn't dream anymore.
