Both Lamora and Crux were the children of nameless, wandering peddlers. Both were orphaned at a young age, but taken in by large, colorful clans. The pair met when their two tribes happened to cross the Court of Mist during the Shadowbinder’s festival. The roads were closed for the holiday, the air full of celebration. The two adolescent Wildclaws fell in love beneath the shady trees, dancing among the foxfire.
Now, though they quibble over the finer points of distillation, or argue whether glass or clay jugs are better, their joint liqueur / apothecary shop thrives—even if customers are never sure what type of “medicine” they’re going to get.

“Do you know what you’re doing?” The red Imperial raised scaly eyebrows, then coughed heartily into his paw.
“Of course,” Lamora said breezily. He had been chewing mint all morning, to hide the heavy liqueur scent from his breath. Why did he always have customers when he was hung over? His paw wandered over huge jugs and glass bottles before settling on a blue one.
“Simply buy this, and—” Rub it on your scales? Drink it? Bathe in it?
To stall, Lamora uncorked the bottle and sniffed it.

Vanilla-coconut overwhelmed the shop at once. The Imperial gave a great, whistling sneeze—like a gust from a hurricane—then looked at Lamora in wonder.
“You, sir, truly are a miracle worker! My lungs don’t hurt anymore!”

Lamora kept his blush hidden behind his paw. “Um…yes. Of course. Simply buy this, inhale its scent every evening beside an open window, and it’s as simple as that!”

The Imperial paid for his purchase and left happy.

Crux shoved through the beaded curtain moments afterward, sniffing.

Oh, no. Not the blue one.

“Love?” She had that questioning tone in her voice. She knew exactly what had happened.

“My dearest angel,” he sighed.

“Where’s my Tropical Radiance?”

“Not a clue,” he said, backing away.

She paused. “You sold it, didn’t you?”

“Maybe.” He braced for a light slap.

It was quick and coming.
