Balbuoy's egg was found by Ice scouts in the Snowsquall Tundra after a particularly brutal dominance war in the region. Her parents were presumed dead and she was taken to an orphanage operated out of the Rimebone Stockade. Once old enough, the orphans of Rimebone were required to chose a path of service to the Icewarden: enter training for the flight's dominance army, or apprentice in an essential trade. Balbuoy chose apprenticeship and was sent to a recruiting camp where she was found by the water sorceress Galatea, who took Balbuoy on as her ward and began training her in magic and potionry.

She spent the remainder of her childhood being raised by Galatea, who treated her like a daughter and gave her a loving home. As a staunch pacifist who hated the war-mongering ways of the major flights, Galatea did her best to shelter Balbuoy from their influence. Balbuoy, however, was a highly ambitious youth that grew restless in her peaceful home. She would ultimately succumb to the allures of rank and personal power and left her apprenticeship to strike out on her own.

Traveling south from the Icefields, Balbuoy eventually ended up on the eastern edge of the Viridian Labyrinth. It was here she met Zorbog, a Water Sprite who's spirit had been imprisoned inside of a skull by a powerful Maren sorceress. The Sprite offered her all of his powers in exchange for releasing him into a new body, which Balbuoy reluctantly agreed to. Once the ritual was complete and much to her chagrin, Zorbog quickly revealed that the two were now permanently linked. If one dies, the other also dies, leaving Balbuoy with little choice but to let him accompany her on her journey.
