Biography

Honeydew Honeydew carefully lifted the small tree out of its pot, careful not to let her clwas sever too many of the roots. She would need to cut a few of them before she repotted it, of course, so that it would continue to grow, but there was a big difference between damaging the roots on purpose and damaging them by accident. And this was important. She could feel Joora's eyes watching her every move, judging her carefully and silently. Honeydew carefully set the small tree and its root-bound soil down on the rock she was using as a table, and pulled the new container forward. It had once been the armour of a Blueridge Greatshell, now repurposed into a plant pot. She had scraped out all of the flesh, attatched bone pegs to hold it slightly above the ground, and had carved holes into the bottom to let the excess water drain. It was already filled most of the way with dirt, ready to receive the tree. Mindful of her claws, she picked up the young tree again, and began gently, but firmly, kneading the roots between her claws, letting what fell loose tumble down her legs without a care. She had laid out a tarp beneath her workspace for just this purpose. Later, she would sweep all the dirt into a pile, and then pour it into another pot. Once she had cleared most of the dirt away from the roots--which were a bright, healthy white--she cradled it in one hand, while with the other she dug into the dirt already in the shell, creating a deeper hole in the middle. Then she lowered the plant down into the pot, carefuly not to let the roots get folded too much. Holding the thin stem with one hand, she used her other one to push the remaining dirt in around the roots, filling in the hole she had made until the tree was standing up on its own. Then, using a scoop and the bucket she had brought with her, she piled more soil around the base of the tree, patting and pressing it down so that the plant wouldn't lean over once it was watered. There. She was done. The Potash Peach tree she had grown from seed was safely in its new, much bigger container, where it would have plenty of room to grow for the next several seasons. Settling back on her haunches, she dusted her hands off, and turned to look at Joora, trying to contain her nervous excitement. The Sapling Speaker watched her for a few moment with its glowing pink eyes, leaning against the carved idol it carried everywhere it went. Finally, it nodded. "Your seeling will grow strong for many years to come. You have upheld your end of the bargain, so I will provide it with the enchantment I promised." Honeydew smiled widely. "Thank you!" She enthused, "Thank you!" While Joora began to weave its magic around the tree, Honeydew grabbed the clay tablet she had prepared earlier, and held it out to the Sapling Speaker. "And this too, if you could. I need the tree to--" Joora whisked it out of her hand with a vine before she could even finish the sentence. Its eyes scanned over the tablet's contents faster than Honeydew thought it should have been able to, considering the ammount of text it held. But after a moment, Joora nodded, seeming satisfied. "It will be done, young Imperial." It said shortly. "But you will leave me now, so I can cast my spells in peace. Without any more interuptions." It glanced meaningfully down at the tablet, and Honeydew hurried to nod in assurace. There wasn't anything else she wanted to ask of the Speaker, this was more than enough. "Thank you." She said again, hurrying to leave it to its work so that it would not grow irritated. It had taken much effort to find a viable Potash Peach pit, and she could only hope that all of this effort wouldn't be for nothing. As soon as she knew that the tree had stabilized, she would give it to Jensun, and hope that it would help him heal, if only a little. |
