The Guardian bounds explosively into the large cavern, sending several smaller dragons head over tail as they try to avoid his lunge. His large orange eyes are fearful, head whipping this way and that to give him a nearly 360 view, until they light on a small, pale Nocturne curled on the grass at the edge of the clearing, well away from every other dragon, nose deliberately deep in a long scroll that trails past him. The Guardian relaxes, then stiffens in shock for a moment--he is alone!

But no. A dark shadow behind and to the left of the pale Nocturne resolves itself into a second Nocturne as it reaches forward to shift the scroll slightly. The pale one nods a brief thanks; the face of the dark one is impassive.

The Guardian relaxes fully, shaking himself out of his headlong charge and finally aware of the chaos he has caused. He crosses to one upended Mirror, then a Snapper, murmuring apologies in hoarse Draconic as he helps them gather themselves back into working order. The surrounding dragons sigh; they have seen this before, after all. Hopefully, as he ages, he will grow calmer. For now, they will deal with his oddities of behavior. It is only to be expected, when one still growing has as much to deal with as he does.

Oriens and Poplica hatched within hours of each other in Clan Necrowmancer. Related not by blood but by happenstance, they nevertheless bonded as soon as they set eyes on each other. Well, Oriens bonded. He hatched first, and so was able to watch Poplica's hatching with fascination and, unknowingly, love.

It is very unusual for a Guardian to find their Charge before they come of age, before they even commence the Search. It's a good thing Oriens didn't know that, or he might have discounted the feelings that burst within him when he first looked on Poplica's narrow, pale face, still wet in the shell. Though he couldn't put a name to what he felt for quite a while, Oriens refused to be separated from Poplica as they grew. The little Nocturne only allowed it because he found out early on that Oriens was strangely immune to his magic. He could neither convince Oriens that he was better than he seemed, or that Oriens should hate him. Oriens saw him for who he truly was, and loved him, the only dragon ever to do so. Poplica hated it. And what was worse: Oriens earned the love of the Clan not by magic, but just by personality. He was warm, loving, a little accident-prone but then, who wasn't at that age? He was kind to others because he wanted to be, not for any personal gain. He had a sunny disposition unmatched by anyone Poplica had yet met. How annoying!

As they matured, Poplica lost any hope of being able to repel Oriens physically as well as magically. Though not very large, Oriens is sturdy, and becomes the equivalent of a wall of rock when necessary. Or, at times, a bowling ball knocking everything, including Poplica, out of his way. Poplica eventually gave up the fight and turned his attention to other matters; magic was more interesting anyway, and more likely to get him results. Ignoring Oriens didn't make him go away, but at least it left him more time to study and enthrall others.

Oriens did not like Poplica's magic. If it were up to him, he would...well, he could not think of hurting Poplica in any way, and his magic was a part of him, but...well. He worried that in a Plague Clan such as Necrowmancer, Poplica's magic could be turned to even more evil than (mostly) harmless infatuation and thrall. He began asking around for the safest Clans he could find across Sornieth, and was given a reference to Stonehearth from one of the travelling Snappers who visited the Wyrmwound. When he tentatively suggested moving to Poplica, he was astounded when Poplica said yes; he was growing bored with the amount of Arcane knowledge he could glean from the rotting texts and scrolls he found around their den. The pair set off and, quicker than Oriens could have hoped, they made it to Stonehearth's doors--cave mouths, that is.

Oriens hoped that by moving them to Stonehearth, he would be able to keep Poplica safe from other mages who might want to use his talents. He also hoped that living in such a barren environment with peaceful dragons might convince Poplica to try to wield his magic in healthier ways. He was wrong on both counts. Not a sun cycle passed in Stonehearth before Poplica was accosted by Candor, an Earth-element Imperial intent upon learning Arcane magic and desperate for Poplica to teach him. Poplica offered a show of force, intending to put Candor in his place; instead, his spell of thrall rebounded and somehow created another Nocturne out of Poplica...or called some other creature up from who knows where, and gave it his eyes and part of his soul.

Oriens was not there when this shocking accident occurred. It is his greatest failing. What if he could have stopped it, prevented it somehow? How could he have let Poplica go unwatched?

What is worse is that, while this new Marasch appears to be a completely separate individual, part of Poplica was clearly ripped asunder and planted within it. So the two are both Poplica and not-Poplica, and his heart aches. This new creature has his love just as Poplica does, but its existence is clearly causing Poplica pain. So it should be destroyed. And yet. Its eyes. Poplica's eyes, twinned and set in a face so foreign and yet almost familiar.

He has no choice but to consider both his charges, now. His greatest fear is that one day, he will have to choose between them.
