Biography
"As I stand at your shadow, as I enter the inferno, I swear this oath of allegiance to you as the first of the Ashguard. I will serve you unconditionally and protect the Blackwater and all her inhabitants.
I will stand at your side for the remainder of my days, relinquishing my duty at your command. If I should fail in my duties, my life is forfeit. My heart beats at your command, my breath is drawn at your pleasure. From this moment onward, I answer only to you.”
Pendelus was sent from a clan far from the Blackwater, a sort of uneasy peace treaty between the two groups. The child was trained from birth in the art of war, mastering a sword before his own native speech, before his own name. He was destined to serve a great and widely-respected leader, but negotiations were souring by the day and his family offered his talents to The Listener; the chilling Skydancer merely smirked at Pendelus as he accepted the offer.
The young Pearlcatcher underwent a grueling ritual-esque ceremony to, in the words of The Listener, "bind [him] to the clan, to the territory, to the defiant Blackwater herself,", in which he had to endure blankets of still-searing ash while he made his way into the center of a raging firestorm; once in the eye, Pendalus then sliced the palm of his paw and placed the bloodied limb on a gnarled tree stump. Upon doing so he was ensnared by tendrils of vine that wove their way up his forearms, gripping so tightly that Pendalus thought surely he was going to lose them. The vines dropped nearly instantaneously once his skin burst open but not before leaving their mark: thin, wavering streaks line up to his elbow, permanently burned into his hide to this day.
Pendalus does not leave The Listener's sight unless dismissed. The gilded Pearlcatcher is present in every meeting, every execution, standing as a silent onlooker. His presence, even without The Listener, puts the other clan members on edge and so he often prefers to remain in his chambers if he is not needed.
On his own, Pendalus is attentive and quick on his feet. He spends much of his free time in the armory, ensuring that both he and his gear are in top shape. Knowing all too well how the others would feel if they knew, Pendalus also keeps an eye on the equipment of the others - if he spots a tear, a kink in some armor, a dull blade...all the items find themselves mysteriously repaired within a week or so.
