no one would think this could happen
the moon hatchling hidden under the corpse of a captain
the wolfskin of blood hiding the shimmering babe
care of a sailor only to leave only after so long
then a friend was there
he was the umber shadow that had followed her to the selling house
soon the king and queen of lightning farm took them
shadows would haunt her
even with the shimmering moon that were her scales
her thistle wings
her moon covered by the twilight
the shadows would haunt her
they would visit in the darkest reaches when she slept
she would hear her name
Sula
She needed to go
she needed to find them
the murderers that took her blood related caretaker
the pirate rogue would be back with blade in hand
and a ship of silver

The scent of blood never does leave you when you’re born in it. Sula’s earliest memory never strays from that stench, or the barely muffled ruckus through a wolf pelt. After her father commanded her to hide under a wolfskin coat and thrust himself into battle, the baby dragon couldn’t have helped the acute fear that pierced her. That same fear lingered even as the pirates fighting around her slowly retreated, even as a female Wildclaw lifted the trembling bundle of fur up and gasped at what she found. The admiral immediately scooped her up and brought her back to safety, telling her crew that the pirates that had left behind a young prisoner. Only after the captain of the navy locked herself in her chambers did she break down in front of a confused Sula; she was weeping for her deceased husband and now fatherless child.

Sula never understood much about her parents, except that they were star-crossed lovers in some way. Moreover, her days with her mother were numbered, for another pirate crew soon took the navy ship by storm. She was not spared the blood and gore of falling bodies over both ships, and the scenes remained carved in her mind all the way until the pirates sold her to an orphanage. By then, erasing what little memories she had of her parents was her best bet at preserving her sanity, something she would come to regret later in her life. For the many years she spent in her orphanage, it was eat or be eaten, as food and water shortages were aplenty, and only the strongest got the best share. Soon the orphanage became too small, too aimless, too boring for the matured Wildclaw, and she was ready to flee her rundown nest.

Not without one last fight though. Just before she was about to leave, a rampaging pack barged into the orphanage with no kind intent. Instinctively she fought, with all the tricks she had learnt in squabbles with other dragons. The Wildclaw she was wrestling down as no pushover, making it harder to get an upper hand. By the time Sula had pinned him down, panting harshly, their surroundings were deadly silent, and when she quickly scanned the sky, the pack seemed to have left with their desired loot. Underneath her, the Wildclaw had went limp, conscious but merely staring at her mutely. Sula had never killed before. She didn’t plan to start with this surrendered dragon.

When she loosened her grip, the Wildclaw didn’t even make a run. Nowhere to go, he mumbled, which Sula nodded to without thinking. They would have stood there, bruised and tired, for the rest of the night, if he hadn’t asked where she wanted to go. Admittedly, she was a go-with-the-flow kind of girl, and she was stunned for a moment. But if there was one thing she desired more than anything, it was revenge. For those who kicked her into this hellhole and narrowed her paths to this single fate. And if she was ruined by the sea, she would take this chance to conquer it.

'Acquaintances’, she corrected, every time Callahan called her ‘friend’, ‘companion’, and the worst of them, ‘love’. The male Wildclaw had a hoard of his own after the many years hunting with his pack, and the gold he had bought them a small ship. Sula was more than proud to call herself a rogue pirate, though she had a cheeky, hot headed guy for her crew. The duo was nowhere near the fiercest of pirates and crews, but they had fun visiting the secret caves and running around on quiet islands, where no one had went. Sula even gradually grew alright with the term ‘love’. A sail to the ruins in lightning territory led to a clan patrol being more curious than frightened of the oddly dressed duo, which led to a quick visit to the odd metal strewn land, and then to a permanent residence. Was Sula ready to find her parents’ murderers? Not yet, but maybe with this crew she would.
