❁ STORY
No one is quite sure when Lotus arrived in the clan because no one saw her do it. Not even Anthelion detected Lotus’ arrival (which was cause for some worry on her part), luckily the strange Ridgeback meant no harm. She merely took up quiet residence in the Deeps below the clan proper and kept to herself. She is arguably a source of less worry than Fiend who had also called the Deeps home. Lotus, as best they can tell, is a witch. Those brave enough to visit her find shelves full of glowing vials and a cauldron that bubbles even if the fire is spent, they find mushrooms of no recognisable species growing on her workbench and unsettling sparks flickering in glass jars casting ghastly coloured light around the space. She practices alchemy and sometimes her brews result in things that might benefit the clan; more than once since her arrival Osprey has found his gardens mysteriously fertilised and though concerning at first, the plants grew stronger than they ever had before. Sometimes, cures for Tarryn’s more worrisome experiments turn up near the hatchery and those flickering lights in jars? They started popping up in different spaces too, providing light in a non-flammable manner. Pencil, in particular, was thrilled with this development. She doesn’t speak much and she keeps a sign at the entrance to the Deeps that reads ‘please visit Aphid in resources for assistance filling out an accidental death and dismemberment form’ in her scratchy scrawl, but as far as anyone can tell, she’s no real threat. Not like Fiend had been. The fact that Anthelion can barely sense her is no longer cause for panic. Lotus and Anthelion are not friends, but they both have an understanding of the darker magics that might be used against the clan and how best to monitor that activity; and that’s a bond of sorts. Lotus denies being a healer, vehemently in fact, but she always seems to know when a treatment might be needed and by whom. She claims she’s not a seer either, disinterested in the goings on of the wider world, content to keep to herself. When caught above ground at night, eyes uncovered, peering up at the pin wheeling stars, she says she’s fond of astronomy. Always she denies playing any part in the clan. But they all know; everyone knows that she cares and that her mysterious magic is working for them rather than against. And for that, they are thankful. ❁ OTHER
