.. On the southern coast of the Ashfall Waste, in a sparse but hardy little forest, in a lodge built of wood and black stone and packed earth, lives a mated pair of guardians. This dragon was raised there, given a peaceful childhood with all the difficulties and lessons of rural life. Nearby is the trade town of Blackfort, and the Hilltop agricultural region surrounding it; the guardians do business with the crop-growers and beekeepers that work there, leasing them use of parts of the Silver Stand as long as they respect the forest and in exchange for goods.

Their parents' charges are the land of the forest and the trees that grow there, "dusty ironwoods" that leach metals from the soil and take on a faint silvery hue. When the children leave to seek their own charges, they take seeds with them, to be planted wherever they settle.
