"Nothing is accomplished without some amount of sacrifice."

- LORD BARTHOLOMEW MORDRED PERCIVAL BORNAGAIN-

╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

Bartholomew Mordred Percival, affectionately known as “Barty” is possibly the most talented mage of his generation and the Archmage of the clan. Though most Arcane dragons possess a certain aptitude for magic, Barty possesses enough magic to rival even the oldest mages of Sornieth. As a hatchling, his magic would release in unpredictable and often disastrous surges, usually demolishing all inorganic matter within a one mile radius.

Tired of having such a blatant danger around, Barty’s birth clan heavily, if regretfully, encouraged his departure, and he complied. His adolescent years were spent secluded as he dedicated himself to the mastery of his abilities. After he was sure that his power no longer posed an unintentional threat to those around him, Barty set out to look for a new home.

He eventually found this home among the dragons of the Shifting Expanse, where he serves as a mage and teacher to all those dragons who wish to learn the arcane arts. Although Barty vigorously studied the language, conduct, and etiquette of dragons in general during his isolation, he found that this resulted in his having an overly-courteous attitude rather than an amiable one. While those who get to know him understand that his aloofness is accidental, he still prefers to spend his time shut up in his den, translating runes, inventing spells, brewing potions, and otherwise getting his work done.

It was during a long night of experimenting with a new spell that disaster struck. Barty was working late into the night when he mistakenly added two pinches of moondust instead of one to a highly unstable concoction. The resulting explosion woke the entire clan, and they were soon flocking to his den, clambering to find out what had transpired. The first dragons on the scene were the medic, Nimbus, and the diviner, Precision. What they stumbled upon would have terrified lesser dragons: Barty’s body was severely burned and covered in the remnants of a thick blue potion that appeared to be sapping his life away.

Being an accomplished Biomancer (one able to manipulate living flesh), Nimbus managed to slow the damage to Barty’s body, though he could not stop it entirely. Meanwhile, Precision managed to rouse Barty into a half-consious state. Apparently, driven by pure instinct, Barty began to use his magic to restore his own body. Beginning inside to regenerate the bones, and then moving outwards to create new skin, wings, and frill for himself. By the time the magic was finished, Barty’s body was half a meter longer than before, altered in its coloring, and stripped of the genes that had decorated it so richly before.

As he recovered, the clan began to notice that his proportions were different, his way of moving was unrecognizable, and yet, it was still the same mind and temperament inside. Realizing that Barty had essentially reincarnated himself, he was given the title “Bornagain,” which to his chagrin, was added to his already lengthy name. Still, the clan refused to drop the title, and Barty eventually came to like the reminder of his regeneration.

As Archmage, Barty retains the title “Lord,” but at his insistence, it is only used on especially formal occasions. He also has a right to a seat on the council that rules Clan LockCharge, but as he sees it as a conflict of interest, he elected to cede the seat to a more experienced Mage named Aracaryn. While Barty is a firm proponent of offensive magic for use in battle, Aracaryn is solidly against the practice. Together, they ensure that a medium is enacted which allows battlemages to be trained but prevents them from gaining too much power over others. Despite their differing views, Aracaryn is one of the few dragons that Barty can truly call a friend.

Presently Barty resides with a female Fae named Hesperides—Deedee for short. Although she has magic, he can’t seem to persuade her to master it, but she does show an interest in his own practices. It is difficult to put their relationship into words for most dragons. They might be considered lifemates, but the two have no children and no desire for any. Their strict monogamy to one another, however, prevents them from being known as just friends. Perhaps their love is a truer, selfish, sort of love which does not require children to feel complete.

The others in Barty’s personal life are few. While he may have become great professional colleagues with Azterfel based on the other Fae’s extensive knowledge of the arcane, Barty finds him too unsettling. Azterfel, in Barty’s view, is unpredictable and liable to use his power for all the wrong reasons – perhaps even immortality. As for Selwyn, Barty has no quarrel with him, but he knows that Selwyn has much to hide even if the other Fae is an exceptionally good liar. When he ignores this fact, he and Selwyn get along splendidly, even working together on many spells and co-authoring various tomes.

Although nearly all the dragons of Clan LockCharge are able to read, Barty is one of only a select few who is able to write. Even Fethryn employs dragons to take down his messages. In this art, Deedee will watch him with bated breath as he traces ruins or letters onto tablets and scrolls. Although he has offered to teach her the skill, Barty soon found that Hesperides—like nearly all dragons in Sornieth—has a tendon formation in her hands that makes writing all but impossible. Frustrated as she was by this development, Barty was able to show her how to write her name in the dirt using her claw. Her hands are very shaky even at this art, and she much prefers to watch Barty trace astrological charts and scribble notes in the spidery scrawl of his.
