He found the temple abandoned. Once upon a time, he was a merchant traveling between the golden city and trade partners in the Expanse. The sandstorm hit suddenly, obscuring vision and darkening the sky. Out of the sands came a Mirage, a center of worship long neglected and buried by the harsh desert. He took refuge beyond the pillars carved into the bluffs. When the storm cleared, he set to work uncovering its secrets, his old cargo slowly desiccating in the desert's cruel sun. Faysal has dedicated his life to the study of the old temple that saved him, forsaking all trappings of his past life. He believes this is penance for his stupidity, thinking he could make the journey through the Carrion Canyon alone so many times. While he still has much pride, he tries to temper it with observance of ancient rituals and the daily upkeep of the temple. He can be standoffish and blunt, spending more time exploring its depths than speaking to the others in the outpost. Despite his general reticence, the other residents of Mirage often go to him for guidance and mediation, leaving him both temple keeper and unofficial sheriff of the outpost. His relationship with Kilne is unique. He seems to have some sort of fondness for her, and expresses this by tolerating her presence in silence. On her part, she often reminds him to act like a real person, since he so often forgets. As for his children? They are the only things besides the temple he would truly die for. |
