Best friends with the maren
Fell into a river when he was young (father wasn't watching) and nearly drowned. A maren Warrior found him and didn't kill him. Loved the maren from then on sought out ways to make aquaducts and hollow out wells and tunnels to that the maren can travel inland fought hard to provide for the maren, much to the disgust of Mako, who constantly fights with maren Now he is their ambassador, and he often visits them to learn information about the rest of the world. 1) Kaveh becomes visibly upset if he goes without drinking water for forty minutes. He bathes once a day and once at night. 2) While the whole reproductive thing is a myth, Kaveh does boast small, gill-like structures on his neck. Most believe that these are tribal cuts made by the Maren. (They can’t actually be gills, can they?) 3) The Maren speak only to him.

The Tribe is full of hot-headed dragons, and this is where Kaveh is an oddity. (Well, that, and his close ties to the Maren). As one would expect of a dragon whose loyalties lie with an aquatic species Kaveh is cool, aloof, and often quietly amused. Much of the Tribe either can’t stand him for looking so smart all the time. The remainder have spread a rumor that his reproductive anatomy is similar to a Maren’s, leading scuds of blushing lasses and curious lads to follow Kaveh around. Furthermore, his water-concerned projects have led to a decrease in illness and enough clean water for everyone. But many chalk this up to Kaveh being an aquamancer, and not anything as basic as germs and good sanitation. ~Caelyn Kaveh doesn't live in the main area of the Tribe. Instead, he lives in a small hut by the river side, next to his pools of water. Many see him staring into his pools and murmiring, often returning with new information. This often leads to dragons noticeably checking the colour of his eyes and frowning when they see vivid Nature green. Kaveh doesn't mind hte rumours. It keeps hte maren scouts that visit him in his pools safe.

I. They were a river-dwelling clan. The river was the source of food, drink and that clean-glowing feeling one got after bathing. This group of hatchlings were all strong. The leaders said that for once Sickness had stayed her hand, and Death his scythe. So on a sunny day, twelve hatchlings went down to the river. They slipped past the sleeping nursery Guardian, tiptoed into the sunlight, then rushed headlong toward the roaring spate. Soon enough, the male hatchlings were showing off for the ladies. They clambered up the slick river stones, prancing and shaking their tails. One Tundra stuck his head beneath the foaming waves. Everyone present held their breath. The Tundra gleefully emerged to claps and cheers. Then the company looked to Kaveh, who, though all the hatchlings were strong and healthy, was the smallest and clumsiest of the bunch. He took a step forward, hesitant. His reflection was blurred, without edges, broken up by spray. With a deep breath, he leapt in. Everything happened too fast. Shrill screams went up from the riverside. The water — cold and tangy — filled his mouth and nose. Then he was howling, too. He careened off the side of a rock, bounced forward and back as the water hurled him forward. The river’s vista suddenly opened, and he saw the ocean. The endless cerulean expanse looked hungry. Waiting. Above burned a bright orange-red sun, dappling the waves. Then a breaker crashed over him and all went black.

II. He awoke in an alien world. The light swirling across his paws was dark blue and shining. When his eyes adjusted, he made out a wealth of glimmering stones. The cold floor was slick with green lichen. The instinctive knowledge was slow in coming — an underwater grotto. In a light blue pool a foot away, a Maren was arguing with several more of his species. They were splashing one another — like hatchlings — but with bared teeth and hissing voices. This was no game. He didn’t want to move, but their voices echoed off the walls and crackled in his ears. Clumsy and sore, Kaveh stumbled over to them and squeaked. At once, their argument ceased. The largest one swam nearer and leaned very close. Kaveh got a good look at the small, diamond-like scales that made his clear skin. The Maren placed one warm hand on Kaveh’s brow. When the dragon didn’t move, the Maren smiled.

III. Even now, Kaveh has no idea how long his tutelage lasted. The Maren never gave him any names, and when asked, they responded “Eyratu” — “We are many.” The bright green males brought him fish, while a darker male made diagrams of aquaducts and channels out of shining pebbles. He was a patient teacher, and sometimes it took a long time for Kaveh to replicate his designs. Kaveh’s favorite Maren was a plump woman with a maroon tail. Her sloe-black hair and bright gray eyes made him feel warm inside. She spoke dragon-tongue with a strange, burbling accent, and related to Kaveh all the lore of the Maren. In their culture, the Tidecaller had a Maren mistress called Nakalah (she who hates). When she was spurned, Nakalah left him and formed her own brave, beautiful beings in her image. For that reason — Nakalah and the Tidecaller’s spat — dragons and Maren warred on. At the end of this tale, Kaveh traced a talon in the iridescent sand by the pool. The Maren knew that this meant he was thinking. “Then why keep me alive?” he asked at last. The woman’s lips flared in a pleased smile. “The time for war is over.”

IV. When they took him to shore some time later, Kaveh recognized none of it. He didn’t know if some spell had let an eon pass — long enough that Sornieth itself had changed shape — or if the Warrior had borne him somewhere strange. That didn’t matter anymore. His clan surely thought he was dead. The Maren watched expectantly as he stepped onto the beach. Here he’d thought the sun was a dream, but it beat down on his scales, warming them. It was good to be home, but … He looked over his shoulder and nodded. “I will return to you.” With that, the Maren vanished back beneath the waves. Story by Caelyn
