If anyone manages to get close to Artemis, the first thing they'll notice is how she despises her brother, Apollo. What she wants most out of life is freedom and a lover of her own, but because of her brother's obsessive protectiveness over her, he murders every male who tries to court her. Every deceitful trick she knows, she's learned in order to get away from him, at least for a little while. Of course, she'll tell everyone she cares for him deep down. After all, they've been through a lot of hard times together.

Of course, due to being forcefully joined to his side, she's become a lot like the one she hates: she uses her natural cunning to manipulate others. Artemis is also prone to envy; her mane and tail fur have dyed a green with a covetous desire for beautiful things, from golden jewels to other dragons. She won't let anything stop her from getting what she wants, Apollo be damned. When her sights lock onto something and she decides she wants it badly enough, she won't be able to see anything else. Her interests quickly turn into obsession. She will run through scheme after scheme in her mind before she comes upon an idea that's most effective, caring nothing for anyone she hurts in the process (including the object of her desires, if they happen to be another dragon).

Artemis and her brother were hatched to two golden dragons named Midas and Stalina. Though their early childhoods passed with both children hitting all the necessary milestones, their parents soon had the inkling that their two children weren't exactly… normal. Heavy rainstorms with rumbling thunder were a common occurrence around the season the two were born. But when he was still young, Apollo would sit at the mouth of their cave and stare at the sky, willing away the clouds until they actually dissipated. This happened every storm, sometimes with Artemis joining him. The lack of water quickly took its toll on the environment. After much deliberation, Midas and Stalina felt they had no choice but to get rid of them for the good of the clan. Before the two learned how to fly, they were abandoned on the side of a lonely, snow-capped mountain.

Confused, afraid, and freezing, Artemis stuck close to her brother's side for comfort, although he knew she was as afraid as he was. Apollo began muttering under his breath. She cocked her ear and listened closely. He was praying to the Lightweaver, the goddess whom their parents worshiped, for help. Artemis whispered her own tiny prayers to the deity of Light.

For two days, no help came. They could find no food on the cold side of the mountain, and no real shelter from the high winds. Artemis feared that the Lightweaver was turning a deaf ear to their pleas. Her stomach writhed with hunger, and her body trembled from cold and weakness. She curled up to rest early that evening, unable to lift her head again once she put it down. In her sleep, she had a terrible fever dream. She didn't recognize that the next day, the third day that Apollo prayed to the Lightweaver, help finally arrived in the form of a Guardian who sheltered them from the elements.

The big dragon brought the two back to his own clan, where they were wrapped up warm, fed, and offered the love of an adoptive clan. Once Artemis recovered, she and Apollo were extremely thankful for their provision.

Of course, the new clan quickly picked up on them, and how something about the hatchlings was off. Fitting in with the other hatchlings was hard. They were made fun of an ostracized from play groups, and even the adults tried to shoo them away when they wanted in on something. Artemis's heart grew heavy with sorrow. Why is it that couldn't find a place in any of the clans they were in? She stayed near Apollo always, who vowed to protect her from any kind of hurt.

Unfortunately, his vow is what spurred him to get physical with other hatchlings, a trait that carried over into adulthood.

After years of Artemis being the only one who cared about him in a clan full of dragons who found him suspicious, Apollo grew to love his sister way too much. He became obsessed with the idea of protecting her from anything. He has come to the conclusion that he knows what is best for her. He will do anything to keep her under his control.

Once they reached adulthood, Artemis came out of her shell to look for a potential mate. She'd always dreamed of having someone to love her for who she was, even if she seemed "unusual". Oftentimes the story would go as follows: she would spy a male whom she decided she wanted to court, even if he was already spoken for by another female. She would craft a plan to catch his eye and lure him away from his current girlfriend, and then put it into motion. Usually, the plan would work flawlessly, and she would have a handsome, strong, gallant mate-to-be… until Apollo got word of it. Her brother would take her aside, verbally tear her apart, and then physically, literally, tear apart her suitor. All her hard work to get the perfect mate, wasted by Apollo.

Artemis hatched a plan: if she couldn't find her happiness living with Apollo, she would run away and live without him! She traveled far across the Sunbeam Ruins and found a new clan. It wasn't hard to convince them to let her join and make her home there. She immediately found a male of her liking, and she asked him out on a date. They wandered away from the clan to be in private and were having a good time when, seemingly out of nowhere, Apollo swooped down and slaughtered him.

Then he turned on Artemis, growling, "How dare you leave our clan! Don't you know the world is dangerous out there? I want to protect you!"

"I don't want to be protected anymore, Apollo!" she cried. "All I want is the freedom to choose a mate and be happy!"

"You have enough freedom under my watch. Let's go home." Once they arrived back home he made a threat: "If you ever run away again, I will kill every dragon in any clan stupid enough to host you. You belong with me, Artemis. You are mine!"

Artemis hatched a new plan: she would run away from the Sunbeam Ruins entirely. It took several days before she reached the Carrion Canyon in the desert of the Shifting Expanse, but when she finally found a suitable clan, she wormed her way right into it yet again. For a week or two, she was happy. She believed she had been successful at forging a new life for herself. Then Apollo showed up—and he made good on his threat. When the two started the trek back to the Light territory, there was nothing left of the hosting clan but bodies in a sea of blood.

No matter how many times Artemis has tried to escape Apollo's control, he always finds her and always brings her back using any means. Usually it is force, but sometimes he simply manipulates her and plays mind games. He then hired dragons to keep their eyes on her and report to him immediately if she wanders away from the clan's territory. While Apollo is free to do as he pleases and mate with any female of his choosing, Artemis is forced to watch from his shadow.

Her solution to this is increased secrecy. The hired "escort" dragons couldn't stay on the job forever. Artemis kept watch of them for several weeks to ensure she knew their schedules, and when they were on break was when she would go out to do her flirting with other males. Displays of affection and lovemaking would take place away from her lair, which Apollo insists is a sacred place. Artemis never brought suitors to her home, lest her brother catch wind of them. Though she doesn't like the "escort" spies, she much prefers to keep them. She knows their schedules. No need to force Apollo to replace them and, once again, waste her hard work.

By miracle of her caring behavior, Artemis was able to avoid producing eggs for many years. It was for the better. Who knew what her monster of a brother would do to her or her eggs if he found her with a nest? On the plus side, those who worshiped Artemis were often beautiful females who left hatchlings for her to help raise, so she could experience motherhood, too, in a way. This habit of hers, taking in the hatchlings of lovely ladies and gentlemen, would actually come to save her: during one outing with a strange male, she became gravid and laid three eggs. Artemis went to great lengths to keep her eggs hidden even as she incubated them—they took a little longer than expected to hatch with the erratic incubation schedules. When they hatched in secret, she convinced Apollo that they were more orphans that needed raising. Apollo didn't suspect a thing: her habit didn't concern him, so he was glad to look the other way.

Even though she managed to raise children of her own flesh and blood, Artemis is still left with an emptiness inside. The empty hunger for freedom, for true love. For a separation from her brother. She isn't sure what it will take to get what she wants, but for now, what she's managing works well enough.
