Varteres is not insane. He is very, VERY sane, and very, VERY hard to kill.

From a young age onward, the coatl has learned to survive- like any plague dragon would. He learned to fight, learned to hunt and learned how to live trough sickness.

However, the coatl barely cared about that last thing- he cared for PREVENTING diseases- to let his body grow so acustomed to various viruses and bacteria that nothing could ever make him fall ill.

No one knew how- but Varteres began to develop immunities to various horrible illnesses. He claimed he ‘conditioned’ his body to defend itself- much like how he as a dragon had been trained by the older dragons to fight. If his body could fight whatever made him ill before he could even feel the symptoms, then that’d be great, right?

In a sense, Varteres ‘vaccinated’ himself- injected weakened bacteria into his body and indeed making himself immune to whatever illness those bacteria caused.

...this, however, was not enough for the coatl, and he EXPANDED on what he wanted to be able ti survive.

Being poisoned had always been a fear of the coatl, but Varteres knew that if he wanted to avoid that happening to him he’d have to grow IMMUNE to it- the SAME way he had grown immune to illness.

...though…. The coatl didn’t dare to be as bold with poisons as he had been with bacteria- drinking enough to slowly let his body grow used to the dangerous substances but not enough to cause him any harm.

After years, he could safely drink gallons of poisons and toxins that could fell an imperial- and not even get a slight stomach ache afterwards.

Many rumors began to spread about the brown and red dragon- some claiming he had been created by the plaguebringer herself- others claiming he had come from another flight to anihilate the plague flight as a whole. Varteres barely paid them any mind- he had come up with an idea so dangerous, so stupidly insane that he doubted a sane man could have come up with it.

Though Varteres is not insane. He is very, VERY sane, and very, VERY hard to kill.

The liquid of the Wyrmwound is known as the most dangerous liquid in the world- brewed by the deity of sickness herself. If… if Varteres managed to become immune to THAT-

…he’d be the perfect plague dragon.

However- to conquer the wyrmwound itself required much, MUCH more time than those silly ‘immunities’ Varteres had trained before. This would take tens of years- maybe more.

Still, the coatl eagerly began ‘conditioning’ his body to be able to handle the vile liquid- smearing small doses of it on his body and wings, drinking small doses of it every day, INJECTING himself with weakened versions of the liquid- the same he had done for all the things he had grown immune for.

Maybe it was because he had grown immune for so many things- maybe it was because of sheer willpower and determination- but after 15 years of preparation Varteres started his descent into the wyrmwound to swim in it’s contents.

Knowing that if he had failed to prepare himself as well as he should have he would simply cease to be, but knowing he couldn’t back out- the coatl lowever himself to be only slightly above the liquid, before letting go of the rope he had used to climb down and dissapearing in the vile-smelling substance.

While the liquid itself was sticky and had a horrible scent, Varteres managed to swim in it. It didn’t hurt- not even a tiny bit…

After managing to swim a fair distance Varteres returned to the rope, and pulled himself out. His feathers were far too sticky to allow him to fly, and Varteres was glad the rope hadn’t snapped- or else it wouldn’t be the sickness that would kill him, but rather the limit of his stamina- of how long he could keep himself afloat.

Once back on safe grounds, Varteres… honestly didn’t know what to do next.

He had grown… immune to everything- poisons, toxins, sickness- heck, even the wyrmwound itself wouldn’t be able to kill him. What… now?

Now he would… he’d…

After thinking it over for a while, Varteres got an idea.

…He’d teach others how to make themselves as powerful- as immune has he was. Even if ost who would listen to him would doubt his methods actually work, and mock him it wouldn't matter. Even if the world would forever think he is an insane lunatic it would not matter.

Because Varteres is not insane. He is very, VERY sane.

And very, VERY hard to kill.
