The unyielding firmness of polish marble, ached against the paws of the giant beast, as he squinted against the scrutinizing sheen of a fortress, polished with a fervent eye until each surface shone as a mirror, until it became impossible for even a glimmer from the ornate windows to escape into the shadows. Somewhere in the room he could hear the scoff of a female pearlcatcher, the smell of ink and parchment emanating from her direction. There is a scribe in here, he thought, forcing his eyes to adjust to the piercing brightness of the room. Cradling a still drying pearl in her golden tail she examined him with a disdainful gaze, "Go home, Gladeling, this is no place for one of your creed." Bright sapphire ink dripped from her claws as she resumed her work, inscribing runic words on a pale golden parchment. Her whiskers twitched with hidden alarm as she realized that he had somehow closed the distance between them without her hearing him. "Did you not hear what I said?" "The Light hears all pleas, including those of creatures not born of her flight." A voice replied, echoing brilliantly off the walls, "And it is our duty as her servants to answer them." "Of course, Justiciar Perseus. Forgive me." The pearlcatcher bowed deeply to the imperial before her, her body squirming as she tried to squelch the disdain of groveling before an imperial. Perseus turned to the guardian, inclining his head slightly, "Pardon our scribe, she is still young in her years outside her clan. What is it that a child of the Glademother seeks so far beyond their home?" The young guardian straightened his eyes burning from light of the room as he attempted to meet the gaze of the creature before him, "I am Ginger, wanderer of the labyrinth, I seek to enlist myself in your order." Seeing the guardian's discomfort the Justicar turned, "Walk with me, wanderer ." Escorting his new acquaintance out of the shining hall he continued, "Our order is not often joined by those outside our birth flight, but it is not forbidden. What is it that you seek?" "It is an instinctual trait of my species to venture out and seek a charge when we come of age. Upon my coming of age I, too ventured away from my adoptive clan to seek something worth dedicating my life to." He looked to Perseus, "I wandered for many months in the labyrinth, amongst the tiny rivers, ancient trees, and delicate life that surrounded me. As I wandered I came across many places and creatures that any of my kin would have deemed worthy of protection, but as I wandered further I began to understand how each was part of something bigger, and vastly more valuable." His wings flexed as he regained his confidence, "After many years I realized, my charge IS the Viridian Labyrinth, and all the creature that reside within. It is a charge larger than any one guardian can do alone, which is why I seek to join your order. To both increase my own strength and abilities as well as to seek allies to aid me in the defence of my home." The Imperial was silent a moment before responding, "In the early days joining, you may find yourself away from your charge longer than is comfortable." He laughed as his eyes met the other dragon's, feeling the confidence emanating from deep within him. "Very well then, I will bring your request before the Lightweaver myself. I have no doubts that your enterance to our order will be granted, though in doing so you will leave your old name behind, a symbol of your newfound life. So now I command of you: Speak your name Paladin!" "My name will be Komorebi, after the light that filters through the leaves of the labyrinth. Where nature and light meet and become one."
