A S P H O D E L "flower of the dead." ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST mate: none (closed) |
QUIET | DELIBERATE | REFLECTIVE | DISTANT | ECCENTRIC
Life and death: they are things that have haunted Asphodel's family for generations. Always, there is some connection, some strange gift or curse, holding each dragon constantly on the threshold. In her mother, it was the ability to grant her life to others; in her grandfather, it was necromancy, the reanimation of bones with bindings of plants. Asphodel does not know whether her own reward is bane or blessing. Its nature unnerves her: she sees things that are not there, hears voices that do not speak, attracts the attention of things that should not exist. In every corner, she finds them: scraps of soul, lost memories, the uneasy echoes of the dead and long-forgotten. She does not mention it to others, for fear that they will think her mad - and she herself doubts, sometimes, whether her mind is not in fact broken. Instead, Asphodel has learned to ignore the impossibilities, blocking them out to focus on what other dragons call reality. Yet she feels a kind of draw towards these nothings, these shadow-creatures and ghosts: a draw she tries to forget, but cannot. And, when night falls and there are no eyes to watch and judge her madness, Asphodel must admit that she would rather give her time to spirits than to dragons. By all accounts, Asphodel is an odd dragon: despite her best efforts to conceal her ambiguous gift, she is still sometimes caught speaking with shadows, or with eyes focused on where there seems to be only air. In her quarters she keeps collections of odd things - bits of pottery, a broken chair, a dusty tome written in illegible code, a worn handful of glass - meaningless to any but Asphodel, who can see the treasures these once were. She does not speak much, but seems constantly preoccupied; this silent reserve is perceived as coldness or as vanity. And, then, there is the constant question on her lips: "who lived here? who owned this? what was this place like, so long long ago?" Despite her asking, Asphodel gets few answers. Though she has yet to discover the full extent and true nature of her gift, however, Asphodel feels a responsibility in it - and whatever these impossibilities are, they are hers to hear and protect. Life and death are common to everyone, after all, both the strong and the small - everyone must die, and everything has an end. But while there will always be dragons to seek the terrible secrets and consult the powerful dead, where is the necromancer of the mundane? Who else will speak for the spirits of the everyday, or treasure the ordinary secrets of yesteryear? Every life matters - but does every death? |
