a merchant, buying and selling valuables. does his best to be honest, but sometimes things happen? he's currently stationed out of ilysiad because baijou had instructed him to stay there and watch over yoshiya and ayi while she was gone. so he offers his merchant services to anyone who needs them, and makes an honest living off it, while also spying on the clan's leader in his douchebag magic oasis gf's stead. what a guy

but he came across baijou like any other person would - exhausted and desperate. he had just been robbed by some bandits and left to die in the desert, but baijou's oasis shimmered into view in the distance. upon approach he found a girl; a delicate, ethereal pearlcatcher seated at the edge of a crystalline pond.

parched and delirious, allie beelined for the water and started to drink with little regard for the girl watching. he drank until he couldn't, then sat back, letting the hot air evaporate water off his skin. only then did he hear the girl talk, in a voice clear like a bell.

you were thirsty? she asked, tapping her fingers on the surface of the water like one would tap them on a table. a strange and magic-imbued movement, and one that drew allie's attention away from the savior spring and towards his surroundings more.

of course i was thirsty. i ran out of water... gods, i can't remember. days ago. allie replied absently. he was too busy taking in the details of the surrounding flora. unlike the unforgiving and undeniably lethal desert outside, this place was bursting with a frankly unnatural verdance - flowers' heads hanging heavy in full bloom from their stems, the sound of water trickling from an unseen source, the silhouettes of birds darting against the brilliant blue sky. a haven. too good to be true, a part of him screeched, but the part of him that was still too exhausted to be rational insisted it was a lucky break.

you can stay, if you want. the pearlcatcher offered, her vibrant blue eyes following the crooked flight of a fat bumblebee through the air beside her. i have room, and time. i have anything you need.

allie dipped his fingers into the spring again, the pads of his fingers pressing the rocky bottom, the cool water lapping around his knuckles. i don't know if -- i don't even know what this place is, who you are. he insisted, gazing at the girl with a sudden cautiousness. i'm grateful for your kindness, but i don't even know your name.

the girl laughed, a sound like flowers bursting into bloom. you do have some sense left in you, she smiled. her free hand pushed a lock of hair back off her forehead, then came to rest beside a vine which looked like it was trying very hard to curl towards her arm. alright. if i tell you my name, will you stay? the desert isn't safe.

allie nodded, and the girl's eyes flicked up to match his own, hers a deeper shade of blue but seeming to be endlessly more engrossing. a tug of mischief pulled at her lips, catching allie off guard.

my name is baijou. you should rest, allie, you look terrible.

allie's smile dropped. he hadn't told her his name.

it was then he realized the forest had closed in around them; no longer could he see the desert outside. if it was even still there - the vines had woven the trees together into a thorny barrier, and the noisy buzz of insects and rustling of leaves started to ring loudly in his ears. the girl, baijou, pulled herself to her feet in a dizzyingly weightless movement.

what- where - allie started, but baijou shook her head, and allie found himself suddenly unable to form words. now baijou's face was alight with unmistakable excitement. a dangerous breed of excitement.

you drank my waters. you learned my name. you promised to stay. baijou explained, moving forwards with each phrase. the sheen of water left on allie's skin had turned freezing, and goosebumps prickled on his arms, but he couldn't move, couldn't stop watching.

you will rest.

when he awoke, allie was briefly blinded by streaks of sunlight pushing his way into his eyes. disoriented, he sat up -- he had been moved. no longer was he by the pond like he remembered; instead, he was propped up against some large tree, with his merchant bag resting beside him. slowly and with not a small amount of under-the-breath complaining he pulled himself to his knees, and from there, used the tree to help him to his feet. his body felt weak and wobbly. unsettled.

you're up, came a voice from behind him. allie jumped and whirled around as fast as his strangely exhausted body would allow. as expected, baijou was standing before him. she looked... well, unfortunately, still gorgeous. the morning (was it even morning?) light bathed her in a glowing golden halo, and tiny insects and other miscellaneous forest dust floated peacefully through the beams. her hair shimmered around shoulders and down her back, and a sheen that was either sweat (unlikely) or magic sparkly something (somehow more likely) glimmered on her delicate cheeks.

i... i guess? allie answered after a moment. what did you do to me?

baijou just smiled, both an infuriating and stunningly beautiful movement. you looked tired, so i let you sleep. now, i need to ask you a favor.

um, not to be rude, but... a favour? i don't think i owe you anything.

no, baijou immediately insisted, taking a sharp step forwards. wrong. i gave you help and protection, and now you owe me whatever i ask. don't you want to help me, allie?

well, she /was/ gorgeous, and technically, she /did/ save his life. allie watched, enraptured, as baijou closed the distance between them with smooth steps. she was shorter than he was by at least a foot, and fragile; allie was both thrilled and terrified by how much power this strange girl had demonstrated over him, both magically and psychologically.

you will travel to a clan on the edge of the abiding boneyard and find their leader, yoshiya. she is dangerous and you need to keep an eye on her for me. i can only check in on her occasionally -- i have other matters here, you see. baijou laid her fingers on allie's neck and looked steadily up at him. her eyes shone with incredible depth, like the entirety of the sea laid within them. allie was sure baijou could feel his pulse fluttering in his throat. allie, can you do it?

yeah. yeah, i can do that.
