From the egg he knew Her: She walked beside him in his gestational dreams, whispering of the world She ruled beyond his shell. She showed him the paradise of Her devising, where the strong grew and thrived and waxed stronger beneath Her guiding hand. She whispered to him that he was among the strong, one of Her chosen beloved children, a born king of the Wasteland beneath Her guidance. She revealed to him all She planned for Sornieth: reshaped in Her image, it would breed dragons strong enough to defy the Shade and tear down the other Ten, leaving Her alone to rule all creation.

In times to come, he would weep for the remembered beauty of Her vision.

But there were devils in paradise...

His parents were monsters and no one else could see it.

Behind her muzzle, his mother was a fire-eyed pale-skinned abomination, loathsome with undeath. His father's soul bore the clawmarks of necromancy, black and festering. Between them they held the reins of a spiral's soul, its body reduced to a rotting husk that only thought itself a dragon. He despised them from the start: His mother's bluff admonition to keep fighting (she had already failed), his father's lessons (what use was blasphemous magic to a true son of the Plaguebringer), the abomination's vile caresses and treacle sweetness (filth had no place in the Mother's realm).

He fled as soon as he was able. He went alone: his siblings were blind to their nest of horror and deaf to his entreaties; much as he loved them, he would not–could not–remain. Better a clean death in their Mother's Wasteland than a life among the perverse wreckage of a necromancer's den.

Strong in the first flush of youth, sharp of senses and cunning of instinct, nevertheless he did not expect to survive. His life was in the goddess' talons: She would judge him and find him worthy of all She had promised, or his bones would abide in the Boneyard among so many other failures.

He was faithful. He waited on Her. For days he hid and hunted and prayed and sacrificed, picking his battles and blooding himself in combat. He took trophies and gained scars.

And in Her own time, She answered. In visions and in visitations She answered, sending Her divine beasts to scourge and afflict him as a sign of Her love. In disease She answered, and he lay fever-wracked and dream-beset beneath the rib-cage of a slain emperor, seeing anew all Her designs for the world. In Her own words She answered: "Annihilation to those who defy Me, and life unending to the strong."

He wept to hear Her, and would have sought exaltation if She would have permitted. But that was not for him–not yet.

There remained devils in his Mother's paradise, and he would yet grow strong enough to wipe them from the face of the Wasteland...

Plaguebearer knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Plaguebringer speaks to him, and has given him Her divine charge to eradicate necromancy and undeath wherever it is found in Her lands (and sometimes beyond them). Too, he is charged with the same imperative all loyal Plague dragons are: Fight, survive, and grow stronger on what doesn't kill him. He is an odd mix of pride and pragmatic humility: The first to volunteer his exceptional skills in battle, and the first to lower himself before those slated for exaltation, recognizing theirs is a higher honor than his.

He structures his life around regular sacrifice–in battle or on the hunt–to the Plaguebringer. He does not stint of his own flesh, exposing himself to whatever novel diseases he might find for the shuddering visions that a fever brings on. He does not question the things–he says–the Plaguebringer has revealed to him, even if Her words in his ears seem at odds with those to Her other clergy.

Zealous and obedient, he knows things he should not.

And one day he will make of Sornieth a worthy gift for his goddess.
