Little is known of Errenkai's past, as he deems it not overly important to be told to any he doesn't trust and even those he does trust don't get to hear many details. Of those he has spoken to, Shenkai arguably knows the most. Curiously, Ordin also knows a great deal of Errenkai's past, which lead to Erren treating the Imperial with suspicion and giving him a wide berth. What is known of his past is that Errenkai is a very old dragon - older than anybody else in the den. He is also an incredibly magical dragon and physically strong, to the point that there are very few in the den who could ever challenge Errenkai in a fight and come out the end alive, never mind victorious. His wings glitter like the night sky, while his body appears to be more stone than scale, rock and crystals growing and forming all over. His underbelly seems entirely hollow, though many believe the rock and crystal growth on his chest protect an unseen heart. Erren himself makes no attempt to dispel any such rumours. He does not speak of why his front paws still carry shackles, nor why growths would have the time to grow on his body at all; his only words to Shenkai have been that he has slept for many years before the first lair occupants arrived. Ordin has spoken out and additionally added that Errenkai is likely more a walking ruin than an organic dragon due to his body being kept still for a long period of time, magically sealed away while also preventing Erren's death. It is also the reasoning for his horns to have grown into an impressive crown, rather than naturally shedding as most Imperial horns tend to, why his wings now reflect a night sky and have cobwebs that seem unshakeable, and why glowing runes are present in several places. When others question Ordin's reasoning for claiming Errenkai to have once been sealed away for so long he became a ruin, the arcane dragon pointed out Errenkai's shackles. In Ordin's own words: "One surely does not have Errenkai's strength and yet remain in shackles long enough for their body to become a ruin voluntarily, no? There is more to him than meets any of our eyes, and I suppose he keeps it secret for very good reasons." ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ |
Errenkai is a dragon with very few conventional friends. His self-imposed isolation is to the point that even the likes of Shenkai cannot call Erren to be a friend, even though he is a steadfast ally. Errenkai rarely speaks to anybody, and has only ever been known to either call out problematic dragons (in the event he can't simply beat them into the ground and chase them off or kill them, first) or to give some wise, brief council to important lair figures. He is absolutely intolerant of spellcasters dabbling in dark arts, which lead to him nearly killing the far smaller Skydancers, Reve and Lani. That the two survived was a miracle unto itself, and Shenkai has since placed the Skydancers under a protective order; it is likely only Erren's loyalty to the lair leader that keeps him from returning to finish what he started. Erren also spoke out - unprovoked - against Zaahir in public. He accused the youngster of being a misbegotten troublemaker who would cause little more than suffering. Notably he did not outright attack Zaahir as he had done Reve, but he also had no problem in telling the other dragon that he would not hesitate to bury him if he turned against Shenkai. It was at this point his steadfast loyalty became very clear, and any who seemed to speak out against Shenkai or otherwise plot against him would be very quickly targeted by Errenkai as threats to the lair. Perhaps the saddest tale is that of Errenkai's only Imperial son, Iestyn. Born to Errenkai and Pietra, one of only two females that the Imperial ever opted to breed with, Iestyn was quickly corrupted by Zaahir's poisonous rhetoric. Between an unknown magic twisting vines throughout his body, likely inherited from Errenkai himself, and Erren's own absence in his son's life due to the constant self-imposed patrolling, Iestyn never developed any positive relationship with his father and was all too easily captivated by Zaahir's embitterment as a result. While Erren never publicly shows much emotion at all, Ordin has mentioned privately that the ancient Imperial grieves for his wayward son, and equally grieves the fact he has no idea how to fix such a broken bond. His older son Katalan, whom he sired with a Skydancer since moved on to another lair, he is on better terms with. He taught the small dragon how to scout swiftly and efficiently, creating one of the lair's best hunters in doing so. As for Pietra, the Imperial female he sired Iestyn with, Errenkai does not consider her to be a mate but does care for her well-being. He is uncertain as to whether he will breed with her again, or if he will breed again at all, given the turn Iestyn took. |
