Raised as a princess and fully expected to rule, it was a heartbreak for Monarch to find that she had no royal blood in her. Tracing her lineage back only made her more confused and desperate. At some point, one of her mother's servants suggested that Monarch simply wanted to be needed, rather than to just rule. Monarch disagreed then, alarmed that a mere servant was making assumptions about her life. Monarch eventually decided the servant was right. Although this happened after leaving her previous clan. Whenever she dwells on it for too long, Monarch sends good wishes to the servant, who merely wanted to assist her. That is one of the only times Monarch has admitted, even if only to herself, that she was wrong. After all, a princess is never wrong. She only makes an error in judgement. Or so Monarch says, often with a wry smile, to anyone that might call her out on any mistake. Kalama was the first to learn this, the hard way. If faes were better at social cues, Monarch might go so far as to say Kalama doesn't like her. But, as Monarch is in charge of guarding the hoard and making sure nothing extra is taken, not many do. They try to charm her for seconds or for more materials, and she scoffs. Makes notes of each day's activities so she can report them to Pria. No one is safe from being reported on, and that causes a rift. That's the price of being needed to be strict. Emperor is much more kind to her than the others, as somehow the two have bonded over being fake royalty that have not lived up to their ambitions. At night, Monarch talks about the wealth of the clan as if it were hers. Emperor talks about the hatchlings he watches as if he were the ruler of a kingdom. Both are happy in their delusions. |
