Jon, the father, has spent his life in service to The Opulent King, Darius. He's a message-boy and errand runner used for odd jobs; alongside two other mirrors, he is somewhat affectionately called the King's guard dog. But he has greater ambitions - namely, to study magic as an acolyte of The Eleven.

Euriona, the mother, has been approached by The Eleven to take up the mantle of their Ice Representative. She is a recent convert to their cause, but has been reluctant to declare support publicly - due in large part to Ellsworth, her clan leader and former mate. The truth is that the love has long since vanished between them, but she is afraid to anger him by leaving the clan; instead, she sneaks away to listen to The Eleven when she can.

Jon and Euriona never intended to have a nest together. And yet here they are. Euriona is adamant: These hatchlings are something Ellsworth can never know about. And so she left then with Jon, with a furious whisper to deal with this situation however he saw fit.
