Biography
JAY SHEARWATER
The Blind Prophet |
Jay wasn't born, exactly. He was created. In a house enshrined in shadow and inhabited by a madman, a rather unfortunate batch of children were created through skewed science, impossible magic, and the DNA of Malory L. Function and Lunesta Skylark. Malory, out for revenge against a family who had wronged him, was attempting to discover if contact with the gods could be made by depriving children of one or more of their senses, or by trading their essence for demon energy. To start, Malory blinded Jay and deafened his twin brother, Raven. Raven showed no signs of being able to contact the gods and eventually gave up on communication altogether, so Malory, not seeing a use for him, threw him out in the snow to be a wolf's next feast. Jay was a different story--he had managed contact with the gods. However, this was not Malory's doing. Jay had been born a prophet to the gods; he would have been able to speak with them no matter what stood in his way, sight or no sight, real or manufactured. Jay could not talk with Komi, The Deliverer, but he frequently recieved prophecies of future events from Darkbi, The Sender. Jay managed to escape Malory's house into the frozen Cognito wilderness and, with the help of a man named Vosile Masotote, made it to the island of Hi Ding, somewhere floating off-shore in the Hudson Bay. Masotote rapidly won the people's trust and became town leader, using Jay's convenient prophetic visions to feign wisdom and gain power. Jay was unaware of this until meeting Majest Skylark and Raizu Capricorn, who rescued his reputation. However, the other villagers were never too fond of him--due to his perpetual surliness, most likely. Jay lived alone on Hi Ding, and he liked it that way. No one was there to bother him, and no one was there to mess with his sytemized organization. Under the supervision of the late town doctor, Raylea, he became apt at combining different herbs and plants into healing concoctions, and following Raylea's death, villagers began coming to him whenever they had a medical problem, despite Jay telling them infinite times that he is in fact "not their doctor". With a life like that, Jay never believed in a happy ending beyond the wreckage in his life's beginnings, but everyone always told him he would find peace, he would find love, and he would find something to make life worth living. Eventually, Jay did just that, discovering his literal soulmate and the silver lining to his storm in the form of one Skyhe Nightingale, come from the old-world to help the island turn back from the clutches of an evil Organization. These days, Skyhe and Jay can be found milling about their village, squabbling over mispaced spoons, cooking lunch with their friends or their son, Caelus, and more than anything, bringing light and love to cast away all their past darkness. |
