Ever since Bristletide was born, he has shown an affinity for animals. Any animal that came back from the hunt alive, he would try to hide from the others while healing it back to health. Nothing got past Terragilt, but if there was only one of it's kind in the lair, Terragilt would have no problem letting the creature run around the den. Eventually, the other dragons would notice the extra critters, some even going so far as eating one on sight (but don't tell Rimeveldt that). Bristletide was resigned to the fact that he couldn't save every animal that came into their lair, so he concentrated his efforts on the familiars. It is his duty to wrangle the unattached familiars and keep them complacent until the time comes to pair them with an available dragon.
