NO EASY LOVE COULD EVER MAKE ME FEEL THE SAME

MAJOR GENERAL

Lyra was going to be discarded. That's not the word her parents would use, and maybe not even the word Lyra would use, herself; for Clan-life stifled her and maybe her betrothal would have been a decent way out. But she feared it would be like home, considering her parents orchestrated the whole engagement with the sole purpose of allying their Clan to her ex-fiance's. She might not get any say there, either, she thought. She would be controlled, under the claw of a new family instead of her own.

But weeks before the wedding, they were charged by centaurs repeatedly. Twice they were besieged and their goods, stolen. More than a handful of dragons lost their lives in these attacks, and it seemed her Clan's strength paled in comparison to the invader's. Many worried that they could be destroyed, utterly, and her father even got her ex-fiance's Clan involved to fortify a defense.

Amid the buzz and the consternation, the marriage fell on the backburner, and Lyra's excitement mounted. She knew she would take advantage of this. Her freedom depended on it.

She had thought that it wasn't going to be easy. Her ex-fiance and his father came with warriors of their own, and coupled with her parents he stood by her side, vowing to protect her. Anyone else would be charmed, but it renewed her determination to leave.

But contrarily, she burst out of the den she had been encased in, through fire and arrows - pretty easily. The guards assigned to her were gobsmacked, and her ex-fiance could only shout as she spiraled into the sky. She didn't know what became of them. Her family, her ex-fiance, and her Clan. They could have all perished or they could have all managed to beat back the Beastclan forces. At the time, it was none of her concern.

Over time, however, it slowly dawned upon her what she had done. She had recklessly run away and in doing so, potentially abandoned everyone to a dire fate. This realization only hit weeks later, when the thrill and the adventure of the road wore off and all the bad memories of being disciplined, punished over petty matters, and talked over like a non-entity did, as well. She felt guilt. So eventually, she traveled back, to see at least if her parents were still alive.

They were. But they were a shell of themselves. They had lost a significant amount of territory, treasure, and Clanmembers to the centaur raiders, and now they were forced to go out of their way to accrue a weekly amount of treasure and gold for them. Even their prized ally left, opting to save their own Clan from the same fate.

So when they saw her, they were angry. They were worse than before. They hurled obscenities and launched themselves at her, and again, Lyra ran away. This time, out of self-preservation.

Lyra wandered. She went back and forth over her choices. Should she have stayed the first time? Maybe not - she could have wound up dead, or having to deal with her parents in the aftermath. But maybe she could have helped beat the centaurs back... And then, should she have even tried to come back? They were almost excitably, understandably ready to tear her to pieces. Any love that they had for her was gone, and all her showing up did was re-open old wounds and whip up bloodlust.

No longer controlled, she now had a finite say in what she would do with her life. But it came with a price, and a lesson that she bore in mind when she found and enlisted in Iole's Army: No more running away. No more cowardice, she said.

She kept to her word.
