It's probably the fault of Balto's spitfire personality more than his love of alchemy that led to him being cast out of his previous clan. Friendly and energetic as he is, the brilliant Guardian has an equally lively temper that is all too easily sparked. His anger very rarely turns into legitimate rage, but he's prone to outbursts when he feels he's being dismissed or somehow wronged. With alchemy still an art that makes many traditional dragons wary, it takes much more finesse to navigate their misgivings.
Balto has an insatiable lust for knowledge. He devours every bit of information he can get his hands on regarding alchemy and takes great pleasure in adapting and changing recipes he finds to suit his own specific alchemical style. However his grasp on magic is weak, so he tends to focus more on the academic side of alchemy and reference it in terms of practical cause and effect.
This, among other things, put him at immediate odds with Xia-Feng.
Though Balto had come to the Tangled Wood seeking a home where his hunger for exploration and discovery might be nurtured, he hadn't really counted on another Alchemist being there already. Or, rather, he hadn't really counted on an Alchemist that thought differently than he did. Xia-Feng's focus on the magical attributes of alchemy vexed him from the moment the two first started talking, and as expected... That led to many a heated debate.
Having to share a section of the clan's territory to work from, as well as research texts and duties to the clan, made it rather difficult to avoid Xia-Feng. Oh he would have loved to, mind you. He found his personality grating and his attitude infuriating, and that was before the two even got around to talking about alchemy-- Oddly enough, despite their drastic differences, their rivalry produced excellent results. Bouncing ideas and theories off one another, even in anger, proved to lead to breakthroughs for the both of them.
