He likes the ocean. He likes his lute, and seabirds, and the way sand runs through his fingers when he picks it up dry. He likes the smoky company of his son, when he can be coaxed to tolerate his presence.
A brilliant boy, vivid and sweet of heart- just like his mother, for all he does his best to veil. Her- he watches the stalls of the markets for, and the baskets of new hatchlings housed within, for wings that flutter with promise and eyes that glow with life.
He waits, he daydreams, he watches the sea crest against the horizon beyond. He wants for nothing, he says. It still doesn't seem to hurt him to draw him out of his shell. After all, he is on vacation, but he's still in no hurry.
