"Now that's no way to greet a newcomer, is it?" A second Guardian emerges from the darkness of the gatehouse. You gawk at the strange markings on her body- the glowing runes and creeping vines being the last things you would have expected to see adorning her. She looks down at you. There is no kindness in her gaze, and you suddenly feel a slight chill run down your spine. Is she friendly or not?

"Tell me," she continues, slowly dropping to a lying position, "why are you in our gatehouse? Are you lost?" You look back at Nidai, who still guards the exit. You want to tell her that you want to leave, but something at the back of your mind tells you that it may not be wise to reveal that to her just yet. You find yourself shaking your head, not a word coming from your jaw. She looks a little confused, turning her head to the side. "Not much for conversation, are you?" The Guardian gently brushes her mantle with a claw. "That's quite alright; Nidai never says much to me either." The second Guardian lets out a snort, slowly lowering himself to the floor. Now you definitely can't leave. The female Guardian reaches toward the belt on her kilt, where you see several books have been hastily shoved.

"If you aren't in a terrible hurry, would you like to hear a story? There's this one short story that I love- I've read it to Nidai perhaps a dozen times but I haven't gotten to share it with anyone else before. It's called Tobermory, and it's... oh, why don't I just read it instead of explaining? You'll stay, won't you?" You cast one last forlorn glance at the blocked door. Nidai hasn't budged an inch. Giving in, you nod. What could it hurt? It's not like you're going to leave.

Samar is a steadfast Guardian hailing from a very large Clan in the Forum of the Obscured Crescent called the Shadowspun Haven. Raised in the dark caves of her birth clan, she had always been drawn to the shadow. She thrived best in the gloom that many other dragons would have turned from without a second thought. As she became older, Samar became increasingly interested in the huge and sprawling library of the Shadowspun Haven. The Guardian spent countless hours wrapped up in the limitless tomes held there. It was in her seclusion that she grew more and more independent. She came to dislike the welcoming policy of the clan's leader, Arias, who brought in any and every dragon that was in need. Samar saw weakness in mercy, and found that she could no longer bear to stay in her home. She soon left to find her charge, though she felt a seed of regret in leaving.

When Samar came to the Clan of the Winding Wood, she was astounded by the strict and controlling power of Takkun. Never in her wildest dreams had she thought such a Clan could have ever existed. It was immediately clear to her that this castle filled with distrust and strife was her charge. She wanted to defend and nurture its power and those that were strong enough to bear to its witness. Samar became one of the gatekeepers, beside her new partner, Nidai. She is very content at her post, happy that she can sit undisturbed by more trivial matters. She will often visit the library in the castle's observatory tower. The Guardian will take out numerous books at a time, bringing them back to the gatehouse and reading them aloud to Nidai. Her favorite books are stories about brave knights or horror; her very favorite ones incorporate both.
