Biography

| AVERY | [♫] Dancing Shadows and Firelight
{ Shadow Witch | He/Him | Gay }

It is said that Avery was born under an unlucky star. His egg, cracked and cold, was found washed up along the shores of the Tangled Wood by a witch, who raised him without love . “You are cursed,” she told him, “and so the world will show you no kindness. I will teach you how to walk the loner’s path.”

From the witch, Avery learned many things—that friendship was a lie told to children to soothe them when they cried, that generosity was for the foolish and the privileged, that chivalry would earn you no reward but a swift and horrible death. An ugly hatchling like him could not afford to waste his time with pleasantries; he would survive by his own merits, or he would fall beneath the feet of his more fortunate kin.

“Friends will betray you,” said the witch, “but your own might will never falter.”

So she tutored him in shadow magics. Though born of the sea, Avery had a knack for illusions and trickery. A misaligned magic-worker with dull scales and tattered wings—he was more unfortunate than even the witch, who had been born in the Wood and possessed the dark beauty of her people. She, at least, had one admirer, hideous though he was; Avery had no one to look up to him, and the witch assured him that he never would. Bitterness took root in his young heart, turning it black, rotting it away until nothing was left of who he had been.

The witch had molded him in her own image, and he would never again know happiness. He would be as miserable as his mentor, until the end of his days.

...Or so she thought.

As Avery grew, his appetite for knowledge expanded beyond shadow magics, into the realm of magical modification. There were scrolls to change a dragon’s genes, their breed, to make them young or old; he began seeking them while the witch’s back was turned, tucking his treasures away where he knew she would never think to look. After many months of searching, he had all that he needed.

Before her very eyes, the witch’s pupil was transformed. His scales grew bright with reds and pinks; his wings burst with the deep purples of the Wood. He stood before her, more beautiful than any dragon she had ever beheld, and smiled, triumphant.

Enraged by Avery’s deceit, the witch cast him from her home and tutelage—but Avery no longer needed her. He had surpassed her, in magic and in beauty, and gladly left her service to begin his life anew. His journey brought him eastward, out of the Wood and into the sun-kissed lands of his Patron’s radiant sister. The light blinded him, but it cast such magnificent shadows upon the earth, rich, dark, and deep. This was a place where his magic would thrive.

He found a piece of land tucked away in the depths of Clan Feldspar’s sprawling pine forests and set to work mastering his craft. No longer content with merely surpassing his mentor, he wished to surpass all who practiced his art, so that he might receive the recognition he had long desired.
