The Vessel lay unused, tucked away in the corner of an unused workshop past its prime; forgotten by all but the hatchlings who would giggle and dare each other to touch, to climb, to poke at gears in reverent awe as though the clockwork would start up again if they could only hit the right switch.

The Vessel had not moved for a long time: The ghost it had been built to house had long since moved on.

It was not until the last traces of life and laughter bled from the Vessel's resting place that the ghosts found their way in. They were not as strong, not as tethered to the world as the Vessel's previous pilot had been, her soul so intertwined with its creator. But if they worked together...

If they worked together, the Vessel would breathe again.


And then one day we were dead alive awake again.
