DREAMCATCHER

“Sir, I’ve come to you because I feel unwell,”

Pastel shot Dreamcatcher a look, as if to say he already gathered. People only came to him if they weren’t well. No one came by to say “hi”. No one had anything to tell him unless he could fix something. He motioned to a chair. When Dreamcatcher didn’t move, he looked at her and blinked.

Dreamcatcher hesitated. “It might be more...psychological...than your area of expertise...perhaps I should see someone else…”

Pastel grabbed her shoulder and once again motioned towards the chair. She sighed and sat down. He produced a notepad and sat across from her.

“You see, sir…” she started. “I’ve been having...nightmares. About ghosts. Terrible things, really,”

Pastel began writing, then looked at her, unblinking yet kindly.

Dreamcatcher paused. “They fit the descriptions Crest has given. Exactly,”

Pastel stopped writing and looked at her. He said nothing. He never did. Still, Dreamcatcher knew what he wanted to say. She always did.

“I’m positive. Do you think this might have something to do with...Contrast’s...line of work? After all, it was my handiwork that allowed him to do what he did. And Crest swears-”

Pastel lifted a hand to cut her off, then twirled it, as if asking her to try again.

“R-right, Crestfallen,” she corrected herself. “Crestfallen swears those...ghosts...are the fallen spirits of his father’s victims. They could be out for me as well. They seem hostile in my dreams,”

Pastel shrugged, then put his notepad down. He looked at her, patiently waiting for her to speak.

“They call me an accomplice,” Dreamcatcher said, her head hanging. “I feel terrible about helping him, but...I had no choice. I had no idea what he would do with the weapons. I thought he wanted to help defend the clan,” She looked up at Pastel. “I just want to help,” she said, tears welling in her eyes. “I never meant to hurt anyone,”

Pastel placed a hand on her shoulder. He wished he could tell her everything was going to be okay. But he couldn’t.
