"I remember your old man."

Bucky watches the scowl that digs into Stark's face, the way his already guarded eyes draw steel shutters that are meant to hide more, and he understands. Steve had told him about Stark, still tells him about Stark, dances around between fond exasperation and flat-out dislike as if he can't decide which he actually feels about this so-called genius.

(Bucky remembers, in a memory that's still a little foggy and suffocating if he focuses on it too long, that he and Steve had danced that same way, caught between hating and admiring each other and stuck there until that fateful day in the alley when Bucky had tripped in a fight and Stevie had managed to get in one of his heavy, lucky shots-)

But Bucky sees in Stark what Steve won't. Not because Steve had liked Howard Stark (at least, that's what he's told Bucky, filling in memories that Bucky doesn't have), but because ...

Bucky's father hadn't been so great, either.

Maybe not so great in different ways than Howard Stark had been not so great, but with the same aftershock that rumbles through Stark now.

(He thinks that what Stevie had seen (still does see) - echoes of what Bucky had been, in what Stark is now).

Stark, who looks like he's ready to either fight or dismiss whatever Bucky has to say, in the same way he's fought or dismissed any attempt at anything Steve has ever tried to say (Stevie's not tactful sometimes, and all of those sometimes always seem to involve Stark anymore. Bucky thinks it's funny as much as he finds it annoying).

"I didn't think too highly of him," he throws out before Stark can pick which he'll do. He shrugs, going for casual, when the billionaire's jaw drops a bit. "First time I spoke with him, I actually decked him. Knocked him out." He grins, because that's another memory he has, and it's clear as day. "Steve didn't even really care."

"I..." Stark's voice is gravelly, like he's trying to roll new words over the ones he had had prepared. He blinks at Bucky, and the shutters ease up somewhat to reveal a light of surprise that was somewhat familiar (he thinks that memory belongs to the Asset. He doesn't know. He doesn't want to dig to find out). "Why?"

"Why did I punch him, or why did Steve not care?" Bucky shrugs again, rubbing the knuckles of his metal hand against his shirt. Could never keep the damn thing clean. "Saw the video of the procedure Steve went through, and all the while your old man was talking about what a marvel of science he was. I didn't take kindly to it, I guess. And Steve understood." He lifted his gaze back to Stark. "I don't ... remember the specifics. But I remember that I didn't like him, and that we didn't get along. So don't-" he stopped polishing his hand to point at the other man, "-think that I'm gonna be measuring you up to him because I think he was better than you or whatever the hell is going on in your head."

Stark opens his mouth - it's probably to argue. Bucky's seen the exact same look on Steve's face millions of times in the past two weeks alone.

"... Watch it," Stark finally says, backing up. He'll run, hide away in his lab as Bucky has noticed he does when things get too ... personal. Weird. Touching? "I might start to like you, Barnes."

Bucky barks out a startled laugh (Stevie will hate that he's missed it - he's been fanatic about catching every single time Bucky's laughed since he had come back) (or is it from before? When a not-small Steve had broken into the Hydra compound and had rescued a different Bucky Barnes from a table and different fate?) (He thinks that may be a memory) (but it could just be his imagination, trying to turn his wishes into things that had happened) (God, he hates that game).

"Wouldn't want that," is all he says, humor in his voice.

He thinks Stark, already retreating, may have smiled a little at that.
