It had been a cold, dusky evening when Topaz had padded over to the fire her father was seated by, brow furrowed in concentration as he carefully arranged herbs on the meat sizzling there. The fire kept going out, and the wind kept blowing the spicy plants away, and before the sun had set even the most patient dragon in the entire clan had grown frustrated. Topaz looked up at Dracul with wide, curious eyes, and moved herself carefully in front of the fire so that the wind blew at her back, keeping the food and flame safe. Dracul had smiled gratefully at her, and taken her suggestions for the dish even if they were childish.

The whole clan had enjoyed the hot meal thoroughly that night.

Since then, Topaz watched the various dragons take turns every day to make meals, until it grew customary for her to be the one to bring ingredients and make sure the dishes turned out perfectly, and they all grew used to having full, happy bellies every evening, complete with Topaz's special touch. By the time she was two or so months old, Topaz's parents relaxed their fearful watch on her to allow her to go out in search of ingredients. Spinel followed her with little subtlety some days, but she didn't mind. He soon found that she could protect herself quite competently when he was jumped by a frenzied spiral and Topaz was the one to save him. Spinel had growled that she'd better not tell anyone, and Topaz just smiled. She never did.

The sweet, young tundra became the chef of the clan, and though she wandered in search of new ingredients she always returned in time to prepare meals, so she never had the opportunity to wander far. She began to grow sad and bored. Her parents could taste it in her dishes, but wold never say anything, for fear that it would drive her to become troublesome like Ametrine.

One other new member of the clan tasted it too--Aquilo. After breakfast one morning he wandered over to where Topaz was laying out strips of jadevine to dry in the sun, and asked her somewhat bluntly what was up with her cooking. Initially Topaz just bowed her head and apologized, but the little fae settled down to watch her, and she sighed and asked him about where he had come from. Aquilo talked about the frigid land he had been born in, and the sweet, minty foods there, and Topaz stopped her work to listen--and not only because she could barely understand his humming tones.

The next day, Aquilo flew over nonchalantly to talk to her about another land he had been to. This continued for some day--with Aquilo even making things up sometimes--until the two grew close enough to hatch a nest together. Soon after, however, Aquilo left, leaving a heartbroken Topaz. The tundra cared for her children, but when many of them passed away, she stopped cooking altogether.

Other members of the clan tried to take her place, trading off as they used to, and her parents trusted somehow that she would recover--she had always been the perfect, quiet daughter, of course. But Topaz couldn't go back to how she was, and ran off in search of her mate.

That was when she found her sister.

Topaz had jumped and nearly burst into tears the first time she stepped on the scarred wasteland and the ground beneath her front paws burst, spewing up sulfurous smoke. She had turned to try and make her way back the way she'd come, but only wound up wandering round and around the bony, hot plaguelands.

She hadn't been able to believe her eyes when the dragon that offered her shelter brought her back to their clan and she saw Cinder sitting beside a mottled tundra sporting antlers, chatting amiably. She was wearing silks and pearly jewelry that perfectly complemented her icy scales, and looked so... so happy. Topaz had eaten quickly, gotten directions, and left immediately, her whole world now upside-down.

When she finally returned to her clan, her parents fussed endlessly over her, and though she continued to say that she was fine, and started cooking again, she never spoke a word about her lost-and-found sister. Somehow, Cinder was not in danger and waiting every day to be saved by one of them, but happy in her new clan, having forgotten completely about them.
