Biography

The Unexpected Hero

"I have... seen things." Jade shutters violently before excusing himself from the conversation.

In his youth Jade was a very excitable, curious, and happy drake. He was never without a smile or an encouraging word. He was the comfort of the group. Unfortunately, that changed after returning from the Deitic plane. He came back cold, at times indifferent. Needless to say he was far from the dragon his best friends knew him as.

Azure was the only one that knew of the changes in him. She had been, after all, in contact with her brother the entire time. Though, she did try to comfort him she knew her efforts would fail. It was impossible to keep him from seeing and living the constant battle he was having to wage in the Windsinger's name.

Now that he's home those he loves have become his comfort, soothing his frazzled nerves. Slowly he is starting to return to normal, or at least as close as he can get to normal.

Jade is in charge of veteran affairs. Regardless of the veteran (military, patrol, enforcer, etc) he oversees their well being in the territory. This, in itself, is a full time job.

Jade did not have a good time while on the deitic plane. The struggle was constant and brutal and he saw more then his fair share of destruction.

I have been beset by a pair of bespectacled cub eyes! That girl is dangerous, I tell you! It is she that has coerced me into writing this life story. If she wasn’t my beloved niece I would not be humoring the Librarian’s desires.

I suppose I should start at the beginning. I was born to a roaming pack of Mirrors, which was never named by the elders that held it together. My mother was one of many that had returned home to have her hatchlings. She hatched me and raised me into a young adult and then she left (as is typical to wind dragons) and I never saw her again.

I say this knowing that fact upset my birth mother. The day she told me she was leaving all I said to her was ‘okay bye’. It was clear in her eyes that she wanted more than that, but it wasn’t what she got. To this day I worry I hurt her with that and, truthfully, I wish I had taken the time to say a proper goodbye. Please do not think my mother was bad, on the contrary she was a wonderful mother that doted on us often. In that same breath, please do not think me harsh for dismissing the mother that did love me with all her heart. I do love my mother, it’s just that my life took a different path than hers or my siblings. Deep down, I think she realized that. It’s the reason she never said anything.

Honestly Razorwing did most of my raising. I spent so much time with Azurefire and her that they were more my family than my actual family. Every time Razorwing would try to send me back to my nest I snuck back. She finally relented. To this day she calls me her sneaky imp. Eventually, she just gave in and took me under her wing.

From there Azure and I took off, we were close and still are honestly. She’s a sister to me. Though, I think my fascination with her started because she was different. I don’t think my young mind could wrap around the idea she was a Guardian and I was a Mirror. Of course, that’s likely because I’d never seen another breed of dragon other than Mirror and wouldn’t until I was old enough to leave the pack. To me, Azurefire was always just a weird Mirror. When I finally found out what she really was it was fine by me, to be honest it made my little sister all the more interesting. I just wish Azure had felt that way about it (I digress; I’ll let Azure explain her feelings about that discovery).

When Az went to Clan Mojarian, Razorwing instructed me to stay behind. She didn’t want me to interfere with Azure’s teaching, but I couldn’t help myself. I lasted maybe a week then took off for the clan. There was a moment when I was terrified they would turn a Mirror like me (wild and crazy that is) away, but Elder Midos accepted Azurefire’s brother without pause. And that was when I got my first job and when I met Stormy. I will admit I was horribly jealous of ‘that Skydancer’, as I called her when we first met. As time went on, I learned to love her as another little sister. Like Azure, there is a connection there and I cannot see my life without her in it.

The three of us were off after that, always finding something to get into or explore. And do not let Stormy lie to you, she is the reason any of us had any adventure in our lives. She always wanted to chase after some rumor she heard, usually from some stranger she just met. Az was always quick to agree and I would just roll my eyes and follow along. And, truth be told, I loved every minute of it. It was difficult to protect both girls though (not that they needed much protection, but every now and again they can be scatter brained and miss threats. Do not tell either of them I said that!), which is why I was so thankful my klutz of a brother tumbled into our lives.

I will never forget that day. Talon came barreling towards us like a boulder. He knocked at least two groups from the Cloudsong before coming to a rest on Az. It was so funny! I laughed so hard. I was rolling on the deck of the air ship. And yes, I did kick a few Skydancers from the deck. I was in love with him the moment I saw his massive self rolling at us. I took right to him, accepting him as a little brother who I also could not see being without.

Our family felt complete then and that’s when Stormy really pushed to explore. For so long we adventured. I would have happily spent the rest of my life just exploring Sornieth and all of her secrets with my family at my side. I’m afraid that was not what happened, though. No, things cannot stay the same forever and our youthful escapades were not immune to that fact.

Talon went first. It both surprised me and broke my heart the day he told us he had to go on his Search. Surprised, because I felt rather positive his charge wasn’t beyond our own borders and heartbroken because he had to go without us. To this day I do not understand why that was. I know full well what transpired during his ‘search’. I, and do not relate this to him, do not believe that was his search at all. To be honest, I think he had a pull just like the girls. I believe he was being lead around for some reason, but it was not to find his charge.

The girls were just as bad, with Az’s need (almost compulsion) to study magic as well as physical combat skills and Stormy’s need to enhance her healing. I will admit, until I returned from the deitetic plane I never had any such pull or compulsions. Because of that I rather felt left out, as if I wasn’t as important as the other three were. I suppose that is the reason I did what I did when the collector showed up threatening the cubs. I never shared that emotion with anyone and I would prefer if it stayed that way please.

Anyway, getting back to the story. After Talon left Az withdrew into herself and she scared Stormy and me. After some discussion, we both decided to stick with her, regardless of what she had to do. I was not going to lose a sister like I lost a brother. No, I would go with her even if she told us it had to be alone. Stormy and both agreed to that, so when we told her about our decision we expected a fight. What we got was laughter and tears.
