The story of Lyrium's birth is something of a legend among both the students and faculty of the Collegium. It is said that he has neither mother nor father, though the stories differ on his precise origin. Some say the egg that hatched him was the result of an experiment by an immensely powerful but secretive sorcerer who sought to uncover the secret of creating life. Others say that his egg was born of magic itself, formed by the arcane energies that dance across the Starfall Isles. Despite the gossip, the truth of his birth is known only to Lyrium himself, and perhaps to his mate, Mana.
Now the enigmatic headmaster of the Collegium, Lyrium was once a thoughtless young dragon with far more arcane power than sense. However, after an attempt to show off to some other young dragons resulted in a terrible accident that nearly caused their deaths, Lyrium realized how much he had left to learn about his abilities. He packed up his worldly possessions and began a decades-long journey across Sornieth, seeking out masters of magic from every flight and asking them to teach him what they knew. Older and wiser, yet now without a purpose, he returned to the Starfall Isles unsure of what his future would hold. Word of his journey had spread, however, and young dragons began to flock to his lair with questions not only about magic, but about many other disciplines as well. Discovering that, despite his travels, his expertise in mundane areas was somewhat limited, Lyrium decided to found a school, now known as the Collegium. Lyrium is a kindhearted but rather stern fae who takes delight in passing on his academic knowledge but has never been very good at the more emotional aspects of mentorship. Nevertheless, it is obvious to everyone he cares deeply for all the students of the school, though he shows it not with words but with his willingness to assist any student who comes to him for help with their studies. |
