Little more than a hatchling, Tazenia had set off from her birth-clan, unsatisfied. Slipping in and out of clans, never settling, never finding the place that was for her, never finding anything quite right, she started to wonder if she would ever stop or if this would be her life going forward. Would she be floating, loose, forever? Or would she find a home—people—to love? What she told herself, on those nights when she would curl up in another unfamiliar lair (or cave, really, when she couldn't find a clan to host her) was that finding the place that was meant to be home was worth the wait, and the loneliness. And on the nights when she was tired and sad and wondering at the number of clans she had known, she thought this: 'Knowing all of these clans has made me stronger—stronger for myself, and stronger for that which my heart will love.' She would remind herself that in each and every clan she flitted through she learnt a new bit or piece of magic—battle magic, yes, but most especially healing magic. A caring, sensitive soul, she would nurture the way she wished she had been nurtured. She would heal the way her heart yearned to be healed. She would be useful. She'd made sure of that, studying with the healer of every clan that was willing to have her. She would have something to offer her new home, once she found it. She only had to remember that she would find it. It was while passing through Clan Yulon, however, that everything changed: everything within finally her settled—she settled and her heart bloomed, finally, in the light. This, this place was right. It was a beautiful feeling, and she cried. She was never be able to tell what it was, exactly, about this clan that called to her; perhaps it was the strength in Kelsus and Maia, or the way they allowed her—pushed her!—to prove herself. Perhaps it was the way everybody had a place, a purpose, a reason. Others in the clan would eventually smile knowingly and look away as she spoke animatedly with a pretty, shimmering imperial. And the looks never changed as they began walking together at night, and lying together in the bright, dazzling summer sun. The knowing looks grew into smug congratulations—they knew, they all said, they could see the infatuation. The love, eventually. All that Tazenia will say to that is that the first time she met Kira, life finally began to make sense. (And if it was with a small, dream-like smile, no-one commented.) |
