She slithered silently in his wake. “It would be easy,” she reminded him. “You have the tools, and he won’t be missed. It would be easy.” . He ignored her, but she still smiled. It was harder now. He struggled more and more to ignore her entrancing words. Eventually, he would yield to her. That, she believed, was inevitable. She drew nearer, coiling her ethereal form around him. She brought one eye close to his, gazing through her reflection and deep into his heart. “Why do you wait?” she asked. “There’s so much knowledge to be gained. Everything you want, at the price of one little spell.” He turned away. He passed through her, as if she were only smoke. She lingered there silently, and she smiled. Knowing, perhaps, that one day he would surrender to her darkness. Or perhaps relieved that it would not be tonight. |

It was late. He worked feverishly, muttering to himself to keep her voice at bay. He knew she was still there, skulking in the darkness. He could never escape those fiendish eyes. She didn’t frighten him anymore. He knew she couldn’t harm him. Not yet. She could only whisper, but that honeyed voice made such sweet promises! Undaunted, he worked on. The lab was in disarray, but it didn’t bother him. The new spell was important. People would learn from it. It would be used for good. Nobody would be harmed. It wasn’t possible. She whispered on. Nevermore ground his teeth in despair. He could no longer tell which of them was lying. He cried out. Unable to stand her sickening song, he grasped the spell components and cast them into the fire. He watched, trembling, as the fire began to consume them. |
